Summer 2023 Movie Preview — From ‘Elemental’ to ‘Barbie’ and ‘Mission Impossible’

Sure, there's a lot to look forward to on streaming this summer … but from the lineup so far, it looks like the movie theater is going to be where it's really at. Summer is known for bringing us some of the biggest blockbusters of the year, and it seems 2023 will be no different.

From movies that are already super hyped up — such as the animated Pixar flick Elemental, which is hitting theaters in June, Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which is due out in July — to action flicks — such as Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 — there's certainly no shortage of movies across all genres to head to the theaters to see this summer. There truly is something for everyone on the release calendar.

Ready for a preview of the summer movies slated to hit theaters in the next few months? Here's the full list.

'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse'

Sony Pictures Animation

Yes, this one came out last weekend, but we'd be remiss if we didn't shout out Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the animated sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, for those who haven't checked it out yet. This time, it focuses on Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), and a new cast of spider folks. Rated PG, this is a great one to see with younger superhero fans.

'Transformers: Rise of the Beasts'

On June 9, yet another installment of the Transformers franchise is here. Taking place after Bumblebee, which came out in 2018, Rise of the Beasts follows what happens when Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots team up with the Maximalists to save the planet from peril.

'Elemental'

Pixar fans, get ready for this new release on June 16. Elemental is about a city where the elements fire, water, land, and air live together in Element City, but not necessarily in harmony. So when Wade (water) and Ember (fire) cross paths, it appears their connection just isn't meant to be, but will they be able to overcome their differences?

'The Flash'

There's been a lot of behind-the-scenes drama when it comes to the filming of The Flash — along with troubling allegations made against the movie's star, Ezra Miller —  but now, the flick about the DC hero is finally hitting theaters on June 16.

'Asteroid City'

Also out June 16 is the sci-fi drama Asteroid City, starring Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Margot Robbie, and Scarlett Johansson. The latest Wes Anderson movie to hit theaters, this one is about parents who take their children to a space-themed convention in the desert where something very unexpected happens, changing their lives forever.

Jennifer Lawrence is back in No Hard Feelings. In the movie, she plays a woman named Maddie who responds to a job listing made by parents who want a woman to help prepare their 19-year-old son for the real world before he starts college. This one — which has already raised a few eyebrows — is out on June 23.

'Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny'

It wouldn't be an Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford, so it's great to see that he's back in The Dial of Destiny, which is out on June 30. In this installment of the franchise, Indiana Jones is trying to find a dial that could change history with the help of his goddaughter (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

'Joy Ride'

Another movie in the Mission Impossible franchise is on the way and comes out July 12. Tom Cruise is back in Dead Reckoning Part I as he sets out on a mission to find a deadly weapon that could bring an end to humanity. The movie also stars Hayley Atwell and Vanessa Kirby.

'Oppenheimer'

Out on July 21, Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) and the creation of the atomic bomb. The highly anticipated movie, which is directed by Christopher Nolan and has a whopping three-hour runtime, also stars Emily Blunt and Matt Damon.

'Barbie'

Oppenheimer has a pretty fierce competitor on its hands! Also out June 21 is Greta Gerwig's Barbie, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. See what happens when Barbie enters the real world for the first time, which is a lot different than Barbieland.

'The Haunted Mansion'

After popular movie franchises such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise, Disney is bringing another one of its most beloved theme park attractions to the screen in The Haunted Mansion. With a cast that includes Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield, and Tiffany Haddish, this one arrives on screens July 28.

'Gran Turismo'

This movie may have been inspired by the popular video game of the same name, but it's about a lot more than racing around a track! Out August 11, Gran Turismo is the true story of a British gamer who turned his skill at the video game into the chance to become an actual race car driver.

'Strays'

Strays might be about talking dogs, but this isn't one to enjoy with the kids — it's rated R! Including celebrity voices like Will Ferrell, Isla Fischer, and Randall Park, Strays is about a terrier out to get revenge on the owner who abandoned him. The movie is out on August 18.
