Topless in Public: The Next Fashion Trend?

I'm in New York City for the next few days, shooting season two of I'll Take That Dare for CafeMom Studios, and when I arrived in town today at 11:30am, my room wasn't ready.

This was no big deal, given the fact that my room was just a few blocks away from Fifth Avenue. I spent my afternoon happily shopping. It was a beautiful day in New York, so plenty of other people were out and about, too — including A TOPLESS WOMAN, OMG.

Seriously. A topless woman came walking down Fifth Avenue with a purse slung over one shoulder, just like nothing was out of the ordinary… sort of like the woman in the photo above. But more… swingy. And less sexy. And do you know what was even weirder?

No one even flinched.

Everyone around me just kept on moving. I saw preteen boys, kids, mothers and fathers, men, and other solo women shopping. Not one person turned to gawk at this woman's bare breasts.

Luckily, I had my sunglasses on, so I could gawk away.

PEOPLE, THE WOMAN WAS NEKKID FROM THE WAIST UP.

I realize that there was a bit of a stir at one time over whether it was legal in New York for women to go topless on the streets (it is)– you know, since men can go topless and no one bats an eye. From time to time, women have banded together to go topless in the Big Apple, but as recently as last year, women walking around doing it alone were still worthy of write-ups on city blogs.

So I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, who sighted a rare solo bare-breasted woman in the city.

Interestingly, not five minutes later, I spotted Jimmy Fallon on a street corner. As far as I know, he and the topless woman sighting were completely unrelated.

I'll probably forget over time that I once saw Jimmy Fallon standing on the sidewalk in New York. But I have a feeling that me seeing the topless woman shopping on Fifth Avenue is destined to go down in Ferrier Family Lore. I already told my eight-year-old daughter about it and she was speechless. Completely speechless.

My question for you… Now that the topless look is catching on in New York, do you think it will spread across the nation?

Would you go topless in public?
