Celebrities have always influenced fashion and beauty trends — some of them scorchingly hot fads that burned out as quickly as they were ignited, and others simmering flames that lingered for years beyond anyone's expectations. Who would've guessed, for instance, that pompadours and beehives would enjoy a resurgence in the mid-aughts or that the thin eyebrow ideal would be replaced by a lust for thick and strong arches?
From the bubblegum pink lipstick craze Nicki Minaj inspired to the Peter Pan collar obsession we developed thanks to Alexa Chung, here are some of the celebrities who sparked major trends.

Britney Spears
Back in the early 2000s, Britney Spears and newboy caps were about as inseparable as the singer and her then-beau Justin Timberlake. Teens and 20-somethings followed suit, topping off ensembles with leather, wool, suede, corduroy, denim, and patchwork newsboy caps.
Gwen Stefani
It was the look that inspired daily sit-up sessions. No Doubt's lead singer originated the punk-meets-skater look of the 2000s with her halter crop tops and low-rise, hip-hugging pant ensembles, which she often accessorized with studded belts, draped wallet chains, checkered suspenders, and fingerless gloves.
Alexa Chung
British TV personality and "it" girl Alexa Chung has enamored the masses with her offbeat tomboy style, which involves a mash-up of vintage-inspired dresses, girly pinafores, denim shorts and overalls, and menswear-inspired brogues, and smoking slippers. Ever the trendsetter, Chung is credited with popularizing rounded Peter Pan collars, which she was was first spotted wearing in 2009.
Nicki Minaj
By the time the self-proclaimed "Harajuku Barbie" released her debut album, 2010's Pink Friday, Nicki Minaj was already known for her signature lip color: a bright bubblegum pink. In fact, she released a signature lipstick shade, aptly dubbed Pink Friday, through a collaboration with MAC Cosmetics that same year. In 2013, she teamed up with MAC yet again and released the Viva Glam Nicki Lipstick, another perky pink hue.

Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to setting trends: Plunging necklines (that green Versace dress at the 2000 Grammys). The Timberland-inspired, Manolo Blahnik lace-up stiletto booties (2000). The "naked dress" (2013). But her most enduring trend inspired by La Lopez is her signature lit-from-within skin, which was perfected by her former makeup artist Scott Barnes. Her radiant complexion even earned its own name: the "J.Lo glow."
Paris Hilton
Like a real-life Elle Woods, hotel heiress Paris Hilton started carrying her teacup chihuahua Tinkerbell everywhere in 2005, even investing in stylish pooch pouches for her canine BFF. The dog-as-accessory trend reached fever pitch soon thereafter, with other stars like Jessica Simpson and Hilary Duff following suit and lugging around their own doggies.
Amy Winehouse
The late singer's soulful sound was a throwback to girl groups of the 1960s, like The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las, and her iconic beauty looks — her dramatic cat-eye liner and signature beehive — were equally retro. Even Karl Lagerfeld was smitten with Amy Winehouse's look, sending models down the runway at the Chanel Pre-Fall 2008 show wearing towering beehives and feline eye makeup.
Kim Kardashian
Before making contouring a buzz word for makeup lovers and turning #waisttraining into a trending Instagram hashtag, reality TV queen Kim Kardashian made all her fans yearn for curve-hugging, bodycon bandage dresses. In 2007, Kim K flaunted so many Herve Leger dresses that they became synonymous with her personal style: her first wax figure replica at Madame Tussauds, unveiled in 2010, was outfitted in a cleavage-baring hot pink bandage dress.

Rihanna
The "Umbrella" singer has been switching up her hair ever since that first massive single: Edgy asymmetrical bob, to Kool Aid red curls, pompadours, shoulder-length blonde waves, short black hair with choppy bangs, and much more. Perhaps her most imitated hair transformation, however, was the shaved-side hair she debuted in 2009. Stars like Rosario Dawson, LaLa Vasquez, Carmen Electra, and Natalie Dormer were inspired to take up the clippers and buzz their own heads — as were countless women all over the world.
Cara Delevingne
Thick and bold eyebrows have been in vogue since Spring 2014, a trend largely inspired by supermodel Cara Delevingne. Not since Brooke Shields' heyday in the '80s have big, bushy, feathered brows been so chic.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow shut down the red carpet at the 2012 Oscars when she arrived in a sleek white caped Tom Ford dress. The fashion drop-the-mic moment led to other celebs flirting with cape dresses on the red carpet — among them Cameron Diaz, Lupita Nyong'o, and Jennifer Lopez. Fashion retail chains also began creating cocktail dresses and evening numbers that included dramatic caping.
Lady Gaga
The over-the-top, avant garde fashions Lady Gaga donned early in her career failed to translate into mass market trends (Elizabethan collars anyone?). An exception: When the "Bad Romance" singer began wearing heel-less platforms by Noritaka Tatehana on stage and on the red carpet circa 2010, shoe hounds were intrigued. Soon enough, brands like Giuseppe Zanotti, Jeffrey Campbell, Chinese Laundry, and Taylor Says introduced their own heel-less (though less gravity-defying) numbers.

Miley Cyrus
If 2013 was the year of butt cleavage, it was primarily due to Miley Cyrus and her fondness for shorter-than-short shorts. Daisy Dukes were modest compared to the skimpy shorts favored by this serial underbutt flasher!
Nicole Richie
In March 2014, Nicole Richie debuted her brand new lavender strands on Instagram, and suddenly, everyone wanted purple hair. Though Kelly Osbourne dyed her hair lavender in 2012, it wasn't until style icon Nicole Richie followed suit that the masses started embracing the pastel shade as the perfect balance between sophisticated and edgy.
Jessica Alba
Though she knows how to slay the red carpet, Jessica Alba is best known for her laid-back, off-duty, California cool style — particularly her love of denim and cozy scarves. In the summer of 2007, celeb style watchers took note of Alba's vast collection of lightweight summer scarves, which she paired with everything from jeans and tank tops to playful frocks.
Vanessa Hudgens
In 2012, floral crowns enjoyed a surge in popularity thanks in large part to boho chick Vanessa Hudgens, who was spotted at the Coachella Music Festival wearing a Cult Gaia rosebud crown. In the years that followed, Hudgens wore bolder floral headpieces to Coachella — and beyond. In June 2015, she arrived at New York City's Neil Simon Theater, where she was starring in Gigi, wearing a Bohemian-flavored crop top and skirt ensemble which she accessorized with a romantic flower crown.

Angelina Jolie
Nowadays, it's not shocking to spot female stars like Lorde, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, and Anna Kendrick wearing pants on the red carpet but, back in 2001, it was quite a bold move. Never one to abide by senseless rules, Angelina Jolie strutted down the red carpet at the 2001 Academy Awards in an all-white Dolce & Gabbana trouser suit, forging the path for future starlets. Both literally and figuratively, she showed women can be the ones to wear the pants — and do so smashingly.
Zooey Deschanel
The New Girl star's penchant for 1960s-flavored, A-line, fit-and-flare dresses —particularly those with perky floral prints and bow accents — sparked a retro fashion revival. Not surprisingly, the 2014 capsule collection Deschanel designed with Tommy Hilfiger was comprised of fit-and-flare frocks with a retro nautical vibe.
Christina Aguilera
Before the release of her 2002 Stripped album, Christina Aguilera updated her look by adding black streaks to her platinum blonde mane. The two-toned, zebra-like look inspired a fad of which Cruella DeVille would have approved.
Cameron Diaz
The hat style most loved by everyone from Al Capone to Michael Jackson and Marlene Dietrich was thrust back into the limelight around 2001 thanks to fedora-loving A-listers like Cameron Diaz. From the lilac Eugenia Kim number she wore to the 2002 Gangs of New York premiere to the off-white numbers she's worn time and again, Diaz's fedora game made us all want to tip our hats to her.
