Loving yourself is often easier said than done — especially when you feel like one of your physical attributes hinders your passions. For makeup artist Rocio Cervantes, her acne is one thing that she often felt got in the way of doing the things she loved most.
Cervantes has always been forthcoming about her skin struggles, and never shied away from addressing her real feelings on them
"…I’ve been dealing with a lot of breakouts that cause me to not be able to put on makeup for days or even weeks it’s very stressful, depressing and sad because I am so passionate about makeup and putting out content for y’all," she wrote in a post. "[yesterday] I went to see my doctor and I’ll be seen a cognitive therapist, someone who can help me cope with picking at my face which is something I’ve struggled with due to my acne."
As someone who has "tried everything" to combat her acne, she's well aware of the social pressures to have "flawless" skin.
And rather than hide from it, she decided to share it.
"I thought I would take y’all on my journey something like acne vlogs. The depression, anxiety, stress, social anxiety, treatments and all that comes with dealing with acne. I wish this was more talked about and I wish acne was normalized so I hope by continuously showing myself it comforts someone else going through the same."
But even she isn't impervious to self-doubt. After a particularly stressful breakout, she confessed that she wallowed a little in self-pity wishing she didn't have acne at all.
"…I was thinking how it would be if I didn’t have acne, what I would look like, and afterwards I was so ashamed of myself for thinking that because I am beautiful," she wrote.
So what did she do? She turned her skin into the star of the show.
Using star stickers and a ton of foundation, she highlighted her "bad" skin in a glamorous way for all to see.
"I hope anyone dealing with anything, whether it be acne or not, knows that they will get through it."
Many shared their experiences and thanked her for being so open.
And some said it even inspired them to put aside their skin woes to pursue what they are passionate about.
Shine bright like a diamond, girl!
You're radiant with or without the makeup.
