Mom Admits to Drugging Her Mother-in-Law ‘To Get Some Peace’ During a Family Vacation

We all know that marrying the person of our dreams also means marrying their entire family, for better or worse! It’s a pretty common issue to have a mother-in-law who can be a challenge to deal with. From critiquing parenting choices to criticizing house keeping or cooking skills, it can be a lot to deal with when a mother-in-law doesn’t have good boundaries or the ability to NOT share her opinion.

Still, we were totally shocked when one daughter-in-law revealed just how far she’d go to get a little break from her mother-in-law. We’re sharing the story but please consider this a juicy bit of gossip and NOT a suggestion for how to improve any future in-law vacations!

The anonymous mom admitted that in order to cope with spending time with her MIL, she resorted to secretly drugging her.

In a first-person account, the unnamed woman shared that she and her mother-in-law, Jane, have always had a strained relationship. According to the essay on Kidspot, “She’s an anxious woman who is always hovering — always offering advice on how I can do things better — and always telling me I’m wrong,” the woman shared. “In short, the woman drives me nuts, but I generally grin and bear it for my family’s sake.”

But things escalated when the woman's family and her in-laws went on a beach vacation together.

The first few days were fine because everyone kept busy and they only saw the in-laws in the afternoon and evening for meals. However, one day her husband, Brian, suggested that he and his father take their two sons for a day of fishing.

They headed out early, which left the woman alone with just her baby daughter, Mabel, and her MIL. Although Jane hadn’t been feeling well, she insisted that they all go out for a girl’s day of lunch and shopping.

Unsurprisingly, it was not fun. The woman explained how Jane criticized her the entire day about everything from what she ate to a dress she tried on.

“First, we hit a café for breakfast, where Jane told me I probably should be ordering skim milk with my coffee, and did I really need butter on my toast?” she said.

Jane also had some choice words about the way her daughter-in-law parents her three kids. “She thought now was a good time to tell me I was mollycoddling my boys too much, and if I wanted them to grow into ‘real men’ they should be spending more time outdoors, rather than inside with me.”

And then, while at a store, the woman decided to try on a dress and Jane told her she looked like “an overstuffed sausage.”

Well, after all of that, the woman was DONE. She told Jane she needed to put Mabel down for a nap so they went back to the apartment.

She then received a text from her husband saying they wouldn’t be back for a couple more hours.

“The idea of sitting with Jane for another couple of hours as she tore me to shreds [sounded awful], so I did something rash,” the mom said.

During the whole day of “fun” Jane was coughing and complaining that she didn’t feel well. So, the woman decided to offer Jane some medicine to make her feel better.

“Luckily, Jane was keen, so I gave her a triple dose of Timothy’s antihistamine medicine that he takes for his allergies. It always makes him drowsy so I thought I’d try my luck. Lucky for me, 10 minutes later, Jane said she felt tired and was going to lie down next to Mabel.”

'The rest of the afternoon passed in blissful peace as Jane and Mabel slept the afternoon away,' she shared.

The mom was able to read some magazines, paint her nails, and put on a face mask.

“Jane emerged as I was cooking dinner, saying she didn’t know what had come over her,” the woman explained. “I’m not proud of what I did, but that woman just pushes my buttons.

“What I’ve learned is that, while family is important, so are boundaries,” she concluded. “We go on our own holidays these days, and I limit visits with my in-laws to a few hours. That much, I can handle without resorting to drugging them.”

Wow. Although we totally understand where this mom is coming from, we do not endorse drugging your mother-in-law! But maybe not going on vacations with them is a good idea.
