Bella Thorne may be busy promoting her first book and fighting off an invasive leak of her nude photos, but she's also continuing to share her skin-care journey with her fans. The actress has long been open about her acne-prone skin type and the image struggles she has faced. Finally, it seems she's had some luck with reducing her acne breakouts! She recently sat down for a Vogue beauty tutorial video to discuss her skin-care routine and everyday makeup look.
Based on Thorne's explanation of how she's gotten her acne breakouts to calm down, it appears less is definitely more for her skin needs.
In the video tutorial, Thorne revealed what her skin's status is as of late.
"I know it sounds ridiculous, but this is my first pimple in a minute, guys," she said, pointing to her face.
Apparently, Thorne has tried a ton of different methods and has finally found a routine and products that work for her. She's having fewer breakouts and it's all due to a few small changes she made. "I'm not gonna wash my face," she said later during the video. And that's the first change!
Before you go comparing her to Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner, just hear Thorne out.
"I don't wash my face in the morning because there's a thing called overwashing your face, and when I had really bad acne, that was one of the things I stopped, and it actually helped my skin," she said during her tutorial. "Not that I'm saying you guys have to not wash your face in the morning; it's just something that works for me."
So is there any value to this method besides Thorne's word?
Yes, there is truth to the "overwashing" concept Thorne speaks of.
"Washing your face several times a day can further irritate your skin, leading to more breakouts," explained the American Academy of Dermatology Association. "There isn't a need to rewash our face in the morning as there isn't anything to remove such as makeup or sunscreen," Monastery skin-care founder and aesthetician, Athena Hewett, told Allure. "The natural oil our bodies produce is good for our skin — it provides a first defense barrier for the external factors of the day."
There you have it! Depending on the nature of your skin, not washing your face in the morning like Bella Thorne could actually be good for it.
Bella Thorne has always been transparent about her struggles with acne and has experienced some pretty terrible trolling.
She has posted her skin's progress at every single stage. "MY SKIN IS GETTING BETTER LETS GOOOOO," she captioned this selfie in 2017. The actress is also known to purposefully go without makeup to flaunt her acne and not let it break her self-confidence. "When you are sick as a dog and your acne is on fleek," the actress captioned another Instagram photo in 2017.
As Hollywood is known for its obsession with perfection it's inspiring to see a celebrity deal with acne in this manner. It's literally a skin condition that millions of people experience and there's no reason for people to feel ashamed or lack confidence over it.
Bella Thorne even had to clap back at a few trolls for teasing her acne-prone skin.
People have shamed Thorne for having acne. Some have even gone so far as to accuse her of doing drugs that cause the breakouts.
"You guys got me [redacted.] What, what cuz I don’t wear makeup and I’m exhausted from working and I have acne, and you guys think I’m [on] crack?" Thorne wrote to slam the rumors. In true Bella Thorne style, she also wrote her note along with a makeup-free selfie.
Thorne also shut down rumors that she experienced acne due to being a "party girl."
In her mini-documentary for Vogue, Thorne addressed the party girl label. “I need to do something with my face," she groaned. "I don’t want to put makeup on, but I look so tired."
"If I go out without makeup, [headlines will say], 'She must have been partying the night before, look at her skin, she’s wrecked.' No, it’s because I struggle with cystic acne.”
Now, those days are behind her and Thorne is acne-free — for the most part.
“My skin has really been a long time in the works," she explained. "I don’t even know how many years I’ve had cystic acne but it started off as dermatitis and I tried basically everything you can think of… Literally, nothing worked. Not one thing. Then, I met this woman who changed my life and now I’m recreating her product in my acne line. The change in my skin has caused me to only ever do my own makeup including on set…”
Using the right products and calming down on the overwashing? Got it! Kudos to Thorne for finding the routine that works for her and for standing up to bullies when she was having a tougher time with her skin.
