The second that Halloween is over all ghoulish home decorations seem to instantly lose their appeal and feel passé. The good news about having to take down all traces of Halloween is that it creates a great opportunity to spend some time putting away what needs to be put away and re-decorating your home for autumn with the kids. You can even turn it into a yearly tradition that everyone looks forward to because it's a fun way to bond as a family. Also, we're all spending a lot of time at home with our kids nowadays and let's face it, they need things to do that don't involve screens and don't feel like a total drag or chore to them.
Even if you're not the kind of persona that decorates seasonally because it seems like too much work, there are incredibly easy and simple ways to add some autumn flair to your home indoors and out. You might not even have to buy anything if you and your kids get a little crafty and clever. Speaking of kids, let them do most of the decorating so that they can enjoy their handiwork being on display throughout the season.
Hold on to your pumpkins!
If you have any pumpkins that didn't get carved for Halloween, let the kids use them as a canvas. Pull out any paints you have and let them use their imagination to create one of a kind pumpkin masterpieces. Once the paint dries, you can put the pumpkins on display indoors or outdoors.
Give your fireplace a pumpkin makeover.
A lot of people decorate their mantles for the season, but we love the idea of decorating your actual fireplace. You don't want to do this in a fireplace that is being used, of course. But if your fireplace isn't being used because it's not that cold yet or because it's not functional, filling it with pumpkins is a lovely way to make use of the space.
Say "hay there" to anyone passing by your front door.
You can get decorative hay bales at your local craft store or order them to be delivered online. If you're ordering them online make sure that you check the size so that you don't accidently get giant hay bales unless that's what you want. Your kids will love stacking them and adding pumpkins as decorations. They'll also love sitting on them! Makes for a good photo opp, too.
Bring autumn indoors.
Decorating your front door area is nice because passerbys or delivery people get to see it, but don't forget that you can do the same thing indoors. Why not let the whole family enjoy elements of fall that they can see without having to go outdoors? After all, how often do your kids actually hang out outside by the front door?
Leaf it to nature!
Are the leaves in your area changing colors? If so, go on a walk with your kids and let them grab any that strike their fancy. Later, at home those leaves can be used to make art or to just lay down on tables. You can also collect fallen pine cones and use them to decorate.
