New year, same foolishness. Popular makeup artists are doing blackface, and it's proof that a newer decade doesn't always mean better decisions or decreased ignorance. A Kuwaiti makeup artist is the latest to come under fire for the insensitive makeup, and well, all we can say is we're tired.
Let's do better.
This is makeup artist Ghadeer Sultan.
The Kuwait-based makeup artist with more than 2 million followers on Instagram has made quite the name for herself in the beauty world. She's known for her execution of dramatic eye looks and sharp contours. However, as 2020 is rolling in, she's now known internationally for something more controversial.
Behold, Sultan in blackface.
Yep, instead of creating a bold, smoky look, or something with lots of glitter, she opted for something problematic. "No matter where you are from or what you believe in, we are all children of this world, and we all share it together equally. Beauty comes in all shapes and colors, so lets love each other and celebrate our unity. I love u all, happy new year," she wrote.
The insensitive attempt at inclusion was a serious miss.
In the case that Sultan's intention really wasn't to offend, she couldn't have been more reckless in her poor attempt to spread the message of acceptance and diversity. It's 2020 — any excuse for blackface at this point is tired and unacceptable.
And her response was ... typical.
"I am not racist … I hate racism," she predictably began. "What I’ve done is only to show what i am capable of … I love you all. Life is meant for living … living with love and passion for every one without thinking of what they are could really change your life … Think 2020 and live with passion for all peoples."
*yawn*
How does this keep happening?
Are we going into a new decade still doing this? Note to those who may be confused: No matter the intention, blackface has never and will never be OK. OK?
