Jaclyn Hill is mere days away from the launch of her official makeup brand. To write that the brand is highly anticipated would be a massive understatement. Jaclyn Hill fans have literally been waiting for this launch to happen for years. Hill herself has discussed hesitancy to officially release it due to fears that it might be "too late." Clearly, she's pressing on as the date is set, the Instagram page is finally getting updates, and the first product has officially been teased.
Of course, the launch wouldn't be a true debut if the beauty community didn't immediately hop to comparisons. This time, critics are calling out Hill for blatantly copying Fenty Beauty. Let's roll all these details out, and when we're done, what say you?
Jaclyn Hill's Instagram account made its first official teaser only a few days ago.
"Are you ready…," the brand baited in an Instagram caption. Obviously, the first photo doesn't reveal much in efforts to build up anticipation (as though people haven't already been anticipating it forever). All we see is Jaclyn Hill posing on a massive diamond looking very rich and glamorous. And hair extensions. We see hair extensions.
Now Hill has given her fans the first full look at her product packaging, and it's getting an interesting response.
If you're unable to see this photo at all, then it may be because of all the glitter, light, and jewels. I do assure you that lip product packaging is there. "Because you deserve all the bling," the brand explained in its caption.
Got it? Jaclyn Cosmetics is all about glitzy fun.
Still, people are focusing on how similar her product shape is to the signature Fenty Beauty packaging.
Do you see it? Hill seems to have opted for the hexagonal shape for her new lip products, which we all know Fenty Beauty is already doing with literally every single product in its lineup, save the Body Lava Body Illuminizer ($59, Sephora) and the Pro Filt'r Foundation ($35, Sephora). From the lipsticks to the Gloss Bomb to the Match Stix ($25, Sephora), nearly everything has that hexagonal shape. The Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters ($36, Sephora) take on the octagonal shape.
People seem to be positive that Jaclyn Hill copied Fenty Beauty.

"Am I the only one who thinks she copied this for Rih's Fenty collection? [I know] they were the ones to start this shape in a lot of their products??" one person asked.
"LOL thought this was like a Fenty Beauty limited edition," one fan joked.
"The packaging is like the Fenty contour sticks with different colour [sic] and a diamond at the top," another wrote.
Hmm… I understand the comparisons due to shape. Still, it might be best to wait and see all of Jaclyn Hill's product offerings before really deciding if she bit off Fenty Beauty.
Several critics concluded that Jaclyn Cosmetics products look like limited-edition Fenty products because of the limited-edition packaging Fenty Beauty uses.

Fenty Beauty's first limited-edition product release that's available only on the official website is the Freestyle Killawatt Highlighter CLF Edition ($34, Fenty Beauty). All proceeds from the sale of this highlighter go toward Rihanna's Clara Lionel Foundation, which helps lower-income communities with programs for health care, education, and more. She also recently released the Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil ($38, Sephora), which has a platinum design and a glittery pigment.
Still, if these are just sideline products for Fenty Beauty, and Jaclyn Hill will use the shape and glitter as a visual identifier for her overall brand, is that really a copycat situation? You be the judge.
Super committed fans don't want Jaclyn Hill anywhere near Rihanna's Fenty Beauty aesthetic.
They want to know why Hill is in the same style territory as their fave. "Why are Jaclyn Hill's lipsticks a hexagon shape when Fenty Beauty invented them??? Fentygons," one fan wrote on Twitter. "Fentygons" is hilarious. For the record, I think that this fan is just joking about Fenty Beauty inventing the hexagon shape. Your geometry class experience should confirm that isn't true.
There are a few fans defending Jaclyn Hill against copycat rumors.
"Fenty wasn't the first brand to use that shape. They are just so big ppl don't realize it's been used before," one person offered up. I actually found a hexagon-shaped lipstick available on Amazon. WENSY Cosmetics Matte Plum Color ($1, Amazon) is available online and could have totally been in existence before the inception of Fenty Beauty. There are also a ton of hexagon-shaped lipstick tubes up for wholesale on Ali Baba if that matters to you.
Jaclyn Hill fans want people to stop being so negative about the packaging and about makeup in general.

"While I agree Fenty is an awesome brand, they didn't create everything," one person wrote on Instagram. "Just because the shapes are similar doesn't mean it's the same?? Why are people so quick to be so hateful and negative and "call out" [people]. Makes me so mad. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it."
One fan even claimed that Jaclyn Hill had this lipstick packaging YEARS ago.

"She had had this shape for five years. She posted on Snap with this five years ago. She [just] didn't have the diamond. She question did Fenty take her idea lol," one person wrote.
Of course, Jaclyn Hill has not confirmed this nor has she addressed Fenty Beauty copycat rumors at all. We should consider that she has been working on her brand for five years. That said, it's possible she did not copy Fenty Beauty.
And if she did copy Rihanna...

Um, can you really even be mad?! Rihanna is a trendsetter and the founder of a fashion house owned by LVMH. She IS a masterclass on all things beauty and fashion. If you're going to be inspired by anyone for anything, is Rihanna really a bad choice? LOL. The lipstick itself is not an exact copy, so this can't be seen as a situation where Hill is trying to market anything as her original idea or is being lauded for innovation. We also still don't even know who came up with the packaging shape. Does it even matter at this point?
Live and let live. Sparkle with Jaclyn Hill if you choose, or with Fenty Beauty if you like. Or buy both. Whatever. Enjoy the makeup. That's what it's for.
