14-Year-Old Allegedly Invited Friend Over To See Mom’s Dead Body & Asked if She Was ‘Squeamish’

Prosecutors in Mississippi say a 14-year-old girl deliberately killed her mother and then invited a friend over to see her dead body. Carly Gregg, now 15, allegedly shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, inside their home in Brandon, on March 19. The teenager is now on trial for her mother’s murder, and the details of what allegedly happened are chilling.

Mississippi state prosecutor Kathryn White Newman said in court that Gregg texted a friend after reportedly killing her mother and asked the friend to come over. The teen then wrote, “Are you squeamish around dead bodies?” After the friend arrived, Gregg took her to the bedroom where her mother was dead from three gunshot wounds, WLBT reported.

It appears the teen may have had a secret life and her mother was trying to figure out what was happening just before she was killed.

Gregg apparently used drugs.

Newman explained in court that a friend of Gregg’s was concerned about drug use and contacted Smylie, according to WLBT.

“So now I want to take you to the real reason we’re here,” Newman said in court. “From the testimony of a friend, he was so worried about Carly’s use of smoking marijuana, so worried about her being high, and so worried about her having these burner phones, that [Carly’s] mom didn’t know about, that he felt compelled to tell Miss Ashley Smylie that day.”

Smylie entered her daughter’s room to look for vape pens, and Gregg seemingly snapped.

Gregg allegedly took a gun from her mother’s room.

Newman said in footage shared by Court TV that Gregg was seemingly upset with her mother and allegedly went into her parents’ bedroom and retrieved a gun from under their mattress. The teen hid the gun behind her back and returned to her bedroom, where Smylie was searching.

“We believe the testimony will show that she peeks her head around the kitchen to make sure that her mom hasn’t come out of her bedroom,” Newman said in the video. “We believe the evidence will then show that she walked with that .357 magnum behind her back, walked into her own bedroom, and then fired three shots into her mother, killing her.”

The defense claims Gregg suffers from mental illness.

Bridget Todd, an attorney representing Gregg, admitted her client killed her mother but said this case is much deeper.

“This not a who-dun-it case,” Todd said, per WLBT. “We know who took action on March 19 to bring about the death of Ashley Smylie and the injuries to Heath Smylie. This is a why case.”

The attorney claims Gregg suffers mental illness like other members of her family.

Gregg reportedly declined a plea bargain.

Law & Crime reported that the prosecution made a plea offer that would have jailed Gregg for four decades, but she declined the offer.

Rankin County Circuit Court Judge Dewey Arthur addressed the teen to be sure she understood the gravity of her decision.

“The jury will either acquit you or you’ll be facing two life sentences or this court can sentence you up to 93 years, do you understand that?” the judge asked. “Yes, your honor,” she responded.

Gregg was found competent to stand trial, and the case will continue in court.
