Teen Girl Allegedly Invited a Friend Over To See Her Mom’s Dead Body After She Killed Her

A 14-year-old girl accused of gunning down her mother in Mississippi allegedly asked a friend if she wanted to view her mother’s dead body. Carly Madison Gregg is accused of shooting her mother, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, at the family’s home in Brandon before trying to kill her stepfather on March 19. The incident was reportedly caught on home surveillance footage that captured damning footage of the teen.

Rankin County Investigator Zachary Cotton testified in a preliminary hearing on April 16, detailing the moments that led up to the fatal shooting and the teen’s behavior after her mother’s tragic death, People reported.

Gregg reportedly fired multiple shots.

According to WJTV, the shooting occurred at the family’s home on Ashton Way, just after 5 p.m. on March 19. Gregg allegedly fatally shot her mother, and when her stepfather returned home and found his wife’s body, she reportedly shot him in the shoulder. Police arrived at the home and spoke with the stepfather, who told them Gregg had been armed with a pistol but he took it from her, and she ran off into the woods.

Surveillance footage gives a bit of insight into what may have happened the night of the shooting.

The mother and daughter arrived at the home, and a short time later, Gregg went into her mother’s bedroom, according to testimony posted on YouTube by @KingFishMs. There was reportedly the sound of a gunshot followed by a scream and two more gunshots, Cotton said in court. Gregg allegedly contacted a friend to come to the house because of an “emergency.”

The friend’s father drove her to the home.

Cotton said Gregg’s friend came to the house and, according to Cotton, Gregg asked “if she had ever seen a dead body before.” The investigator added that Gregg then “proceeded to show her deceased mother” and allegedly showed the gun used in the shooting, and Gregg reportedly admitted to firing multiple shots.

Gregg took off but was captured a short time later.

She was taken into police custody and later charged with her mother’s death. Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said Gregg’s attorney attempted to get a bond reduction for the teen, but a judge denied the plea, according to WJTV. She is being held on a $1 million bond in the Rankin County Adult Detention Center and charged with murder and attempted murder.
