Legend Jenkins was only 7 years old when he was struck by a car and killed while crossing the street in Gastonia, North Carolina. Legend and his 10-year-old brother reportedly attempted to cross West Hudson Boulevard outside the designated crosswalk just before 6 p.m. on May 27, 2025. A 76-year-old woman struck Legend, and first responders transported him to an area hospital. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Now, Legend Jenkin’s parents, Samuele Jenkins and Jessica Ivey, face charges in the boy’s death.
Queen City News reported that Samuele Jenkins and Ivey allegedly allowed the boys to walk alone, leading to Legend’s death. His parents face charges of involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect, and misdemeanor child neglect.
“In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children,” the Gastonia Police Department told the news station.
Shortly after Legend’s death, Ivey took to Facebook to share her sadness.
“I can’t believe this has happened. My baby, my heart and soul is gone. I’ll never hear him say ‘I love you mama’ or hug and kiss him, I can’t even look at my baby in person ever again,” she wrote. “I don’t know how some people deal with this because I’m not dealing with it too well. Please please keep my family in you guys prayers and keep my baby’s name alive forever!”
Before their arrest, the parents established a GoFundMe for Legend Jenkin’s final expenses.
“He loved playing any sports,” Samuele Jenkins wrote. “He was truly a warrior, but after being revived close to twelve times he unfortunately passed away at. WE ASK that y’all send prayers for our family in this time of heartbreak and if you wish to give, anything would be very grateful.”
The family’s raised more than $6,000 of a $10,000 goal so far.
Both Samuele Jenkins and Ivey are held on a $1.5 million bond.
The driver reportedly cooperated with police and showed no signs of speeding or careless driving. Currently, she is not facing any charges.
