A Florida woman is facing multiple charges after falling asleep at the wheel of a vehicle. Abby Lyn Schagrin was driving with her children on a bridge and either passed out or fell asleep. When police approached the car, not only did they find the three people inside but also drugs littered around the car, and the discovery opened a floodgate. It was revealed that the mom has an extensive history with drug abuse, among other legal issues. The case is still being investigated.
On the morning of September 4, 2025, deputies from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office were observing traffic on the Stuart Causeway Bridge, a media release shared. While there, they noticed a vehicle stopped on the bridge.
“The car was running, in drive, with the emergency brake engaged — as if the driver had fallen asleep in the middle of traffic,” the release read.
Inside, deputies found a woman, identified as 37-year-old Abby Lyn Schagrin, who was asleep at the wheel. Next to her was a crack pipe “in plain view.” And when police looked into the back seat of the car, they found two children. The toddler and infant were also asleep, but they were not buckled into car seats.

Once Schagrin was secured, deputies got the children out of the car safely. “It was determined Schagrin was under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” the release noted.
First, the mother was taken to the hospital for observation. Upon her release, she was arrested and taken to Martin County Jail. The children have been put in the care of relatives.
Schagrin is facing multiple charges. They include DUI refusal (with license suspended), possession/use of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, and two counts of child neglect, the release noted.
“Schagrin also has a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for battery, DUI, property damage, methamphetamine manufacturing, possession of controlled substances, resisting arrest, and disorderly intoxication,” the statement read.
In the statement, the Traffic Unit’s officers were praised for their “alertness” in detecting the situation and for bringing two young children were brought to safety.
