Police are investigating why a Brazilian teenage boy injected himself with butterfly remains mixed with water. Some are trying to find a connection between the action and an online challenge, but they still don’t have definitive examples or challenges.
The story of the Brazilian teenage boy shocked people. He denied claims that he saw someone online injecting themselves with butterfly remains, so it’s hard to know what exactly made him decide to do such a thing. A cause of death is yet to be determined.

Davi Nunes Moreira, 14, died on February 13, 2025, in Planalto, local news reported. The teen began vomiting and having trouble walking, so his father took him to the hospital. His condition continued to deteriorate, so doctors moved him to a different hospital unit.
Moreira was in the hospital for seven days before he died. But before he succumbed, he told health care workers that he had injected his right leg with the body of a butterfly mixed with water. This sounds unbelievable, but the boy’s father confirmed it when he found the syringe under his son’s pillow.
In the days following the injection, the boy began limping. His father noticed, but the teen simply brushed it off as an injury he got when playing with friends. Over time, his symptoms got worse, and the boy had no choice but to be checked out by a doctor.

While initially hesitant to tell the truth about his illness, the boy eventually gave more details. He told doctors that he kneaded the body of the butterfly, extracting the liquid from its body. Once he had, he put the liquid into a syringe and then injected it into his right leg.
Luiz Fernando D. Relvas, a specialist at Hospital Santa Marcelina, spoke with Brazilian news site VivaBem, the Daily Mail reported. He said the boy’s death “could have been an embolism, an infection, or an allergic reaction.”
“We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body,” he continued. “There may have been air left inside, which could lead to an embolism,” which could lead to death, he said.
Investigators are also taking into account the possibility that toxins from the mixture caused the boy’s body to shut down as he went into septic shock.

According to the Daily Mail, Moreira denied injecting himself with the butterfly because he saw the “experiment” performed online. The newspaper noted that Brazilian media isn’t clear on if that’s true or not.
Currently, investigators are still waiting for the autopsy to get an official cause of death. That will potentially unlock more clues into the teen’s death.
