A mom and her babysitter in San Francisco have been convicted after failing to take a 2-year-old girl with severe burns to the hospital. According to prosecutors, the toddler’s mom, Reneisha Devore, 29, knew about the injuries. In spite of this, she did not seek medical care for her daughter for weeks.
Additionally, the toddler’s babysitter, Diana Washington, 42, was aware of the injuries but did not intervene.

When the toddler arrived at the hospital, she had second- and third-degree burns covering 50% of her body.

At first, medical staff at UCSF Children’s Hospital Mission Bay thought the toddler had already been covered in burns for days. Because the girl’s injuries were so severe, she was sent to Saint Francis Memorial Hospital Bothin Burn Center, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. There, medical staff found that the burn wounds the toddler suffered had actually been present for seven to 10 days. Some had been there for more than two weeks.
She spent two months in treatment due to the severity of the burns.
To treat the injuries, the toddler had to undergo “multiple surgeries, debridement, and skin grafts.” If her mom had taken her to the hospital sooner, these treatments might not have been necessary. Per the district attorney’s office, the burns went from second-degree burns to third-degree due to “the delay in care.” This delay led to the toddler’s “permanent disfigurement.”

Assistant District Attorney Melissa Demetral called the case 'particularly deplorable and heinous.'
Assistant District Attorney Melissa Demetral shared her thoughts on the case in the news release, noting, “The conduct in this case was particularly deplorable and heinous not just because of the injuries, but because it was an act committed by a mother against her child. It’s exactly these types of cases where it is imperative we give a voice to the Victim who – given their age – often cannot advocate for themselves.”
The mom and babysitter were both convicted.

The toddler’s mom was convicted of mayhem and child endangerment. Because the girl’s babysitter knew about the burns but did not do anything to help her, she was also convicted of child endangerment. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins called the case “horrific” and said she is praying for “the victim’s continued healing and progress.”
It's unclear what caused the burns.
Although investigators found that the delay in care caused the toddler’s injuries to get worse, they did not say what caused the burns. Both the mom and babysitter are in custody. They await sentencing, which is scheduled for February 4, 2025.
