A 19-year-old who was reportedly trying to break up a fight was fatally shot at a party on September 1, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, "a large group had gathered" and "a fight broke out."
Based on initial interviews, investigators believe that 19-year-old Christian Archen Whalen was trying to break up the fight when 18-year-old Kenneth Watson fired a weapon. Christian was taken to the hospital, but died from his injuries. His girlfriend, Lacy Milling, says she learned of his death via a two-word text.

Lacy was nervous about the party Christian was going to.
Lacy is now grieving the loss of her boyfriend, whom she described as the “kindest person” who “would help anybody, like, even it came down to his worst enemy,” per NBC 4.
She told the outlet that she was worried about the party Christian was going to, and became increasingly concerned when he didn’t respond to her texts.
She saw posts about Christian on social media, then received a text from his dad.
Checking social media made her even more anxious, as Snapchat was flooded with “pray for Christian” posts, she told NBC4. Christian’s dad sent her a text to tell her what happened using just two words: “Christian died.”
“Literally, those two words,” she told NBC4.

Kenneth Watson was charged in connection to Christian's death.
According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, 18-year-old Kenneth Watson has been “charged with homicide and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.” The sheriff’s office noted that the investigation is ongoing, and “many more interviews need to be conducted.”
“Detectives are relying on witnesses who may have been at the party that left before law enforcement’s arrival,” the sheriff’s office shared in a news release. “Anyone with information is asked to contact the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office.”
Lacy described him as 'everybody’s friend.'
Lacy set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for “Christian’s life events, funeral, memorials, and shirts & stickers to be made for all the many people who loved him.” On the page, she described him as “the most gentle, genuine, loyal, and caring person somebody could ever meet.”
She also shared the last text she received from him prior to his death, which read, “I’m sorry that I’m not the best person, but I love you.”
She said Christian 'hated' arguing.
When speaking to NBC4, Lacy said Christian “does not like arguing at all. He hates it so much.”
On her GoFundMe page, she called out the “selfish people” who took Christian away from “his poor family.”
“His poor family now has to live on without their precious son because of these selfish people that don’t deserve to carry guns,” she wrote, later adding, “this sure has taken a toll on many people. We love you, Christian.”
