A family in Mexico rejoiced when police reunited them with their baby after two terrifying days. The infant, Abdiel, was only 3 days old when a caregiver allegedly drugged his mother and kidnapped him.

Police worked tirelessly to find the missing baby, and the woman accused of abducting him.

The mother had hired Nely Janel Ramírez to help care for her newborn son.

As People magazine reported, the unnamed mother asked Ramírez to help with Abdiel in the days after his birth. But something went wrong, and the mother alleged the caregiver drugged her, and when she awoke, her son was missing. A manhunt soon began.

The infant was reportedly alone when he was discovered.

People reported, per Infobae, that the infant was abandoned by the person who took him. Neighbors ultimately found the baby in Valle de Chalco in Mexico's Hidalgo state. It is unclear whether the alleged kidnapper was arrested or if any charges have been filed in the case.

Police worked together to find the infant.

In a post on X, Andres Andrade Tellez wrote in Spanish that several agencies worked together to find the baby.

“Today a mother was reunited with her baby as a result of teamwork, we appreciate the collaboration with @FiscaliaEdomex and @PGJE_Hidalgo, from this moment on the ministerial authorities carry out various investigation procedures, such as genetic identification expertise. With #ElPoderDeServir and the unconditional support of the head of @SSPCMexico , @rosaicela_ and @SSP_Hidalgo, together we build the peace entities that families deserve,” a translated post reads.

Others agreed.

“Collaboration between governments is essential for the well-being of our entities,” Delfina Gomez, the governor of the State of Mexico, posted on X.

Sadly, this type of kidnapping is not unusual.

There have been many cases in the last several years of women attempting to abduct other women’s newborn babies. In 2022, Jesenea Miron, 23, allegedly posed as a nurse so she could try and take a newborn from a patient’s room at Riverside University Health System — Medical Center in California. She was ultimately arrested and charged with felony kidnapping.

According to experts, women who steal babies tend to fit a similar profile.

ABC News reported on Gloria Williams, who admitted to posing as a nurse and stealing a newborn infant from a Florida hospital in 1998. She raised the child as her own and was ultimately sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2018, one for every year she raised the stolen child as her daughter.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found that women who stole other women’s babies often found themselves in similar situations: they wanted to preserve a relationship, they had a history of miscarriages, or they were unable to become pregnant.
