When Melissa Barber received a call from her daughter's high school informing her that Kelsey was sent to the office for a dress code violation, she was confused. The Missouri mom knew her 11th grader was wearing jeans and a long-sleeve red blouse, so school staff couldn't possibly take issue over how much skin she was showing. Yet, a staff member still had a problem with Kelsey's attire due to her body type. And when Melissa learned what transpired between her 17-year-old and the teacher who sent her to the principal, this mom went from annoyed to furious.
Melissa posted a photo of her daughter wearing the shirt that her teacher said she's "too busty" to wear as a "plus-size" girl.

Although Melissa finds nothing wrong with her daughter's fall blouse, Kelsey's Child Development teacher deemed it inappropriate because of her figure. "When my daughter asked why she was being sent to the office, this teacher told her, "Bustier women need to wear clothing that covers their cleavage,'" Melissa wrote on Facebook. "They said 'Plus size women need to dress accordingly.'"

Melissa swiftly went to Joplin High School to join her daughter in a meeting with the counselor and principal to discuss what happened, but things only got worse from there. "This principal continued to defend the teacher by saying, 'Well, we have never had a problem with her before,'" she wrote. "I began explaining that my daughter was just sexualized by her teacher in front of the whole class. He continued to defend the teacher."
In the meeting, Kelsey said how uncomfortable the conversation made her and asked the principal to move her to a different class, but he woudln't allow it. "I was close to losing my temper," Melissa wrote. "I took my daughter by the hand and we left. I refuse to put my daughter in a situation where her self-esteem is completely destroyed."
On the same day, a male student was wearing a sexually explicit shirt, yet Kelsey was the only one singled out for "inappropriate" attire.
Before meeting with the principal, Melissa recorded a video of a student describing an offensive shirt that a fellow classmate was wearing that day. "His shirt says, 'Our erections are harder, stronger, and last longer' and four different teachers saw him wearing it," the student said. Yet, according to Melissa, this male was never approached about his outfit.
"She is there to learn," Melissa wrote. "This whole time she was missing out on an education while we were all sitting in a room discussing her boobs. How often does this happen to your sons? Seems like another way to keep girls uneducated."

"Only one of these girls got dress code violated today."

To prove just how unfairly her daughter was treated, Melissa also shared a photo of Kelsey and her best friend in the different outfits they wore to class that day. "They walk together all day," Melissa wrote. "The teacher said Kels was 'plus-sized' and had to be careful what she wore … They said: Her boobs are so big, that if she lifts her arms all the way up you 'might' be able to see her stomach."
Melissa isn't backing down and even met with an attorney, as she plans to continue fighting for her daughter.

For those who think Melissa is just trying to fight dress codes or that she should send her daughter to a different school if she doesn't like the rules, this mom wants you to know how wrong you are.
"First, I do not have a choice where she goes to school. This is the public school where we live. I can not afford private school," she wrote. "Second, my issue is with the teacher who brought my daughter in front of the class to discuss her body type, clothing options, and boobs' size."
Melissa isn't trying to change the dress code — she's trying to change how staff are allowed to treat students and talk about their bodies. "I started this fight for my daughter. I will finish it for yours."
