A baby found wrapped in a bag in a wooded area in Georgia earlier this month is getting an outpouring of love and support from the public.
More than 1,000 people from around the world have reached out to Forsyth County authorities, offering to adopt the infant investigators named India, according to The Today Show.
“It’s amazing the number of people who are looking to take on a new life into their families,” Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman said, “and we got somebody who tried to throw one away.”
The newborn was found abandoned by the side of the road wrapped in a plastic bag, covered in blood and with her umbilical cord still attached.
Video footage captured the dramatic moment when India was found June 6.
Alan Ragetz is seen in the video describing how he discovered the infant after he heard her crying from his nearby home.
“My kids said, ‘That’s a baby,’ and I said ‘That’s an animal,’ ” he says in the video. He goes on to explain that he later went to check on the sound and made the shocking discovery.
Fox 10 reports that as of Thursday, authorities had received about 150 tips regarding baby India’s case and that she is is in the custody of Georgia’s Department of Children and Family Services.
In an update given to Fox 5 on June 10, officials said they have not located the baby’s mother but reported that India is in good health at a local hospital.
The sheriff’s office praised the good Samaritans who first came to the aid of baby India.
“Had it not been for those observant citizens who called 911, we would be having a most difficult conversation today,” Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman said.
“It was without doubt divine intervention that this child was found.”
On its Facebook page, the Forsyth County sheriff's office posted a reminder about its safe haven law.
The sheriff's office is also asking anyone with information regarding baby India’s case to call the tip line at (770) 888-7308. Callers can remain anonymous.
