‘Attention-Seeking’ Grandma Shows Up to New Mom’s Delivery Room — With a Police Escort

Sometimes mothers can go a little overboard — especially when it comes to the kids. But no one expected one woman’s mother to show up with a police escort to her delivery room — and now the woman feels like that ruined her big day.

At first, the Original Poster (OP) says her mother was livid that she was pregnant.

As she explained in a post on the r/JUSTNOMIL forum, her mother was angry that she was making her a grandmother “too young, ruining my life and she asked me to leave her house after I told her.”

“Mind you I was in my 20s, stable job, had my own home, a long term SO,” the OP wrote. “While she worked part time and had a dodgy boyfriend.”

But then all of the sudden her mother changed her mind.

Her mother told her she even quit her job “because she would obviously be looking after Little One (LO) when I had him and was extremely upset when I told her this wouldn't be the case and that she should take the full time job,” she explained.

“Spoiler: she didn't.”

Not only that, but also her mother became “fixated” on being in the delivery room.

That was not a part of the OP’s birth plan. She didn’t want anyone in the room except her and her partner and didn’t even want anyone in the waiting room so she could control when people visited.

“I was very anxious that she was going to come in unannounced to the delivery room (only one hospital in my area) so planned on telling no one,” she wrote. Her mother “insisted I would change my mind the closer we got to birth.”

“Spoiler: I didn't.”

A week before the OP was due, the future grandmother called her and told her to get out of her house.

Apparently, her “dodgy” boyfriend threatened the OP “to get back at her.”

“I said some choice words telling her to sort her life out and hung up on her and moved on with my day,” she wrote.

That same night the OP went into labor, but she and her partner kept the birth quiet.

Understandably, she wanted to feed her baby first, take a shower, and have a nap before having family and friends rush in.

“I had a wonderful delivery and experience, nothing like I'd feared with [my mother], but if the story ended there I wouldn't be here!” she continued.

After the birth, the OP gave her close family a one-hour window to come and visit the baby.

“We were wondering if my [mother] was going to show up in the allotted one hour time frame I gave (known for being ridiculously late) when she walks in escorted by a police officer!”

Obviously, the new mom wanted to know why there was a police officer in her hospital room, but her mother said she would tell her later.

It was “extremely awkward with the police officer just standing in the corner of my delivery room,” OP wrote.

“A few days later she fills me in that the police escort was there for her protection from her ex, who for months she tried to convince me to ‘give a chance’ and ‘he's not actually into anything bad,’” she recalled. “Though she is a prolific liar, especially for attention, so have to take anything she says with a grain of salt.

“Now when thinking of my birth I don't just remember the lovely time with my Significant Other (SO) and LO, I also think about all of the stress and craziness that went with it!” she added.

Most people were stunned that her mother would risk putting OP in harm's way.

"What! LOL. She totally did that for attention," wrote one commenter. "That officer could have easily waited outside for her."

"I just have to say that I find it very alarming she assumes you would be in danger somehow due to her ex-bf," another person wrote. "Or the idea of her imagining you in danger in any form. Where would that assumption even come from?"

Another person pointed out that the whole story sounded fishy.

"Oh wow I’m so sorry she sounds awful," the person commented. "Police officers don’t play security for someone in a domestic violence situation. I’m wondering if she was under arrest or something else and she lied to you. Her story it just doesn’t add up."

The OP had to agree. She later wrote that she felt her mother did it all "for attention."

"She's a huge attention seeker and likely lied about being in danger/exaggerated to get a police escort," she explained. "She also does stuff like this when she's done something wrong and wants to appear as a victim."

But at least now OP has a sense of humor about the whole thing, which took place a while ago.

"I'm still able to look back fondly on my son's birth and [I'm] so glad she didn't manage to ruin the actual birth or short period afterwards and laugh at how ridiculous she is with my partner," she wrote.

Not to mention, she got one memorable birth story out of the whole situation.
