Mom Makes Daughter’s Halloween Costume — 35 Years Later, Her Granddaughter Is a Perfect Fit

We love so many things about Halloween: candy, awesome decorations at people’s houses, and perhaps most importantly, Halloween costumes. Every year, parents and children agonize about how to express themselves through their costumes. They stand in the aisles of stores and comb their own closets to make something fun and festive.

One mom on Reddit shared that this year, she is going for nostalgia as a Halloween costume theme. She decided to dress her daughter in her old Halloween costume that was made by her own mother years ago.

The story is just too sweet.

Posting in the r/MadeMeSmile forum, the woman shared side-by-side pictures of her and her daughter wearing the Halloween costume.

“35yrs ago my mother handmade me this Halloween costume. She saved it all this time and now gave to my daughter,” she wrote.

The costume is adorably retro.

Anyone who was a child in the 1980s or ’90s can immediately recognize the sweet pumpkin Halloween costume. It kind of looks like an orange potato sack, complete with a yellow jack-o’-lantern face and a hat made to look like the pumpkin stem. In the photo of the mom, she’s sitting next to an almost identical jack-o’-lantern on the porch. Her daughter’s updated photo features a decorative corn stalk instead.

People shared their own costume nostalgia.

“My mom made me almost the exact same costume in 1990 and I remember hating it because it was stuffed full of wadded up grocery bags and leaves and I was convinced I was covered in bugs inside,” someone wrote. “I was. Lol.”

“My mom made me a very similar one around that same time!” another person commented. “I think it’s around here somewhere…”

Someone else wrote: “What was it about the late 80’s/early 90’s deal with pumpkin costumes lol. I’m 34 and my mom did the same thing for my brother and I haha.”

“That’s so cute!” another comment reads. “I had a costume like that and we stuffed pillows in it to make me round.”

Another Redditor wrote: “Great costume!! My granddaughter is at a Halloween party tonight wearing the clown costume I made my daughter when she was 2. Made me so happy because it’s one of 3 things I’ve ever sewn.”

Some tried to say that it wasn't the same Halloween costume.

A couple of people tried to argue that the two costumes weren’t the same, popping the bubble of joy.

“Zoom in..this is not the same costume,” one person wrote, with another person replying, “Agree…this is a great re-creation of the costume but is definitely isnt the same one. The mouth is different and the material is slightly different as well.”

“You can tell they aren’t the same costumes… The curvature of the smile is completely different on them,” someone else suggested. “One older one is open wider and the newer one is a more acute angle. That wouldn’t have changed over time unless the costume was replaced entirely.”

Many appreciated the bond created by the costume.

Whether or not it’s the same costume, many of the commenters could see the love and care created through sharing the special nature of the costume.

“That is amazing and the costume held up fantastically!” one comment reads. “Props to your mom’s skill and care.”

Another person wrote: “Handmade!? Amazing. Way better than my sister’s costume from about 35 years ago…my mom used a trash bag to turn her into a dancing raisin.”

“This costume is a timeless treasure!” a commenter exclaimed. “Your mom’s love shines through every stitch what a wonderful gift for your daughter!”
