Mother-daughter relationships are beautiful and sometimes complicated. For many moms, when we see our daughters, we see ourselves, and that isn’t always easy. We want their lives to be happy and fun, but we also understand that life has its difficult moments. In a perfect world, our daughters would always share their innermost secrets and struggles, but life certainly isn’t perfect.
Kristin Hallett has daughters and is always looking for tips to strengthen her relationships. Hallett, who helps others deal with grief, learned a trick from another mom and shared it on her Instagram account. It’s a must-see for all moms and may help us crack the code.

Hallett watched a beautiful interaction between a mom and her daughter.
She explains in her video that she noticed a mom and her daughter having a touching moment during a grief circle she was hosting. After the meeting was over, Hallett asked the mom for her secret. The mother said she gave her daughter a special journal to help them learn to communicate better.
“I told her if there’s anything that you’re scared to tell me, scared to ask, afraid to use your voice and say out loud, put it in here,” the mom explained to Hallett.
The mother swore to keep it a secret.
She shared with Hallett that if her daughter had something written down, she’d put it under her pillow for her mom to read. The mom would then write back to her about what she needed to know, which would be the end.
“It will never come up. It will stay in here. It’s ours to share,” she explained.
Hallett believed the mom had a powerful message.
She wanted to share the message with other moms struggling to communicate with their daughters or sons. No one's ever said parenting is easy, and it certainly helps to have some tricks of the trade.
“It felt like a nice pay forward today,” Hallett said with a smile.
Her followers loved the idea.
One mom hopes to use the tool with her son. She wrote, “My son lost his father last year. I know it will weigh on him in the years to come. What a wonderful idea.”
Many others agreed. Someone wrote, “Love this!!! The type of nurturing, listening, and acceptance I longed for from my mother. A great reason to overcome my resistance to writing in a journal too. Will do this for all my children!”

Some parents are already using similar tools.
As one mom wrote, “We just gave our 8 year old son a back and forth journal for Christmas. He has already written a few things and it’s so precious. ❤️”
Hallett’s post was a great reminder for one parent who is ready to try the journal gain, writing, “I did this, but somehow we stopped I think we should dig them out again!”
