As parents watching our kids hop on modern trends and roll their eyes at everything we don't know, many of us can't help but begin to feel like we are getting old. Nothing ages you quite like kids.
Children now are so into technology. They are playing games on tablets and phones. We did not even have cellphones when we were growing up. Things that we did as kids are so far removed from our own kids' experiences that it is staggering and pretty laughable.
It is fun to look back on things we may have forgotten. Many of these tweets are so relatable if you grew up in the 1980s and '90s. Enjoy this fun ride looking back at things that now make us feel so old!
Burning Our Favorite Music Onto CDs
It all started out as pushing the record button on our radio to catch our favorite songs, but as time went on, we upgraded. Soon we were no longer making mixtapes, but music mixes on CDs. Burning CDs was our favorite pastime, but imagine your kid finding your stack of burned CDs and not even knowing what they were!
The Risks We Took for Music
We had to get all of the songs to put on our CDs from somewhere. Napster and Limewire were the giants back in the day. It took forever to get just one song, but it was so worth it. We appreciated it more. Many times, songs were labeled incorrectly or came along with some sketchy files that we should have paid more attention to, but all we cared about that was we got our sweet tunes.
When Tire Swings Were Tires
On our elementary school playgrounds, we had tire swings that were actually made out of tires. This idea is not something you see as much of anymore. Instead, there are saucer swings that take the same concept, but are made out of other materials. It is fun to look back and remember how we used to make it spin like crazy and then fall when we got off.
Listening to Aqua & Taking Care of a Tamagotchi
Forget about baby dolls to teach you about parenting, we had Tamagotchis when we were growing up. These annoying toys were kind of awesome. They were super needy and most of the time, they were just unhappy. Kids now have iPhones, but we had little blobs that yelled at us when we didn't feed them. Also, I don't know about you, but I still listen to Aqua.
We Are as Far
This tweet presents us with a staggering realization. We are just as far from the 1980s as we are from the 1940s. It seems like 1980 was just 20 years ago. I do not know what happened. It is crazy to think of all that happened during both of these time periods. I really am getting old when I don't realize just how quickly time is going, but kids do that to you.
Wearing a Pacifier as a Necklace
Pacifiers are usually for babies, but do you remember when they were also fashionable? This tweet is a great throwback to a strange jewelry trend that many of us are trying to forget. The whole concept of wearing a pacifier as a necklace is one of the strangest trends to come out of the 1990s.
Kids Will Not Even Know What They Are Building
Given how much technology has changed in our lifetime, it is crazy to think about all of the things that kids will not understand. This throwback Lego idea is one of them. While I remember using a typewriter, kids now will have no idea what this thing is that they are building. They will not even know the joy of lugging around a computer tower.
'Legally Blonde' Turns 20!
This tweet from Reese Witherspoon is sure to make you do a double take. How in the world could Legally Blonde have come out 20 years ago? We're still doing the bend and snap! It seems impossible that she has aged 20 years since then also, which just seems unfair. I know I look far different than I did that long ago. Now I feel old.
A Floppy Disk From RadioShack
There is so much going on in this tweet to make us feel super old. First of all, it's a floppy disk. Never mind that I remember that original "floppy disks" were actually floppy. Second of all, it is from RadioShack! Kids now will have no idea what either of these things mean. They will think that we 3D printed the save icon or some such nonsense.
'Wannabe' Is 25 Years Old
The Spice Girls were our jam back in the day. It is crazy to think that the song "Wannabe" is 25 years old! How did that even happen? The music that we used to listen to is suddenly considered "oldies." That is so crazy. Give me some Spice Girls, Ace of Base, Aqua, and Whitney Houston for a good time any day.
The 'Teletubbies' Sun Baby Has a Baby
So Teletubbies is a bit after my time. I was 13 when that show started, so it is not one that I watched. I do remember it though, and I bet some of you watched it as kids. The baby who played the Sun Baby on the show actually has her own baby now. It is crazy to think that 24 years has passed since that show debuted. Do you feel old now?
Kids Will Never Understand This Satisfaction
Lite Brite was one of the coolest toys. While many of us associate it with the '80s and '90s, it actually came out in 1967. Many kids played with it throughout the years. My favorite template for it was of Garfield the cat, so if that does not say 90s, I'm not sure what does. Kids today will never know how satisfying it was to have one of the pictures come to life.
There Is Just So Much Going on Here
If this picture doesn't make you feel old, I'm not sure what will. This picture has so much in it. Growing up, Blockbuster was the place to be on Friday and Saturday nights. Nothing can equal the disappointment of a new release being completely out. Then, you have AOL dial-up internet. Getting dial-up was an exciting day, but our kids will never know how obnoxious that sound was. Add in Crystal Pepsi and this tweet is so full of nostalgia.
The Sweet CD Car Cassette Adaptor
Show me a CD cassette car adaptor and I'll raise you a car without a tape player or electric windows. Cars have changed so much since we were kids. If this tweet doesn't take you down memory lane, you are not old. It reminds me of all of the changes that cars went through as we grew up. From tape players to CD players to just playing music through your phone, things have certainly changed.
The Last Day of School Has Sure Changed
The last week of school growing up was always awesome. There was nothing left to do, so most of the time in elementary school there were parties and movies. Nothing quite inspired excitement as seeing the TV cart sitting in front of the classroom. It always meant a movie day, which were the best.
