Why Kids (And Parents) Love Summer Kamp

When it comes to summer, there's nothing more fun for kids than going to kamp! Whether they’re going to day kamp or sleepaway kamp, spending time away from home over the summer is beneficial for both kids and parents. For kids, summer kamp is like school, but with only the really fun parts, like playing outside, spending time with friends, doing crafts, playing games, and doing activities! Here are some of the reasons kids (and parents) love summer kamp:

Making New Friends

One of the best things about summer kamp is the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends! Summer kamp brings together kids from a variety of places and backgrounds, so kids can meet people they wouldn’t necessarily get to meet at school or in extracurricular activities.

Connecting With Old Friends

If kids go to the same summer kamp year after year, they will get a chance to make lifelong friends — going back to kamp gives them a chance to reconnect with these old friends. Plus, learning how to maintain long distance friendships when they’re not at kamp is such a great skill to have later in life!

Exploring Passions

Nowadays, there are summer kamps focusing on every possible passion: sports, outdoor activities, art, music, acting, technology, etc. If your kids have a particular interest or passion that they don’t get to explore enough at school, see if you can find a kamp where they can fully dive in!

Learning New Skills

No matter what kind of kamp kids go to, they’re guaranteed to learn a lot. In addition to the skills the kamp is known for (like athletic skills at a soccer kamp, coding skills at a tech kamp, acting skills at musical theater kamp, etc.), kamp is also a place where kids will pick up interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and more.

Embracing Playtime

Let’s be honest, kamp is all about play. When kids go to kamp, they can expect to spend a significant portion of their day playing — playing games, playing with friends, playing outside, and more.

Becoming Independent

Kamp is a great place for kids to become more independent. Whether they’re going for the day or going for weeks on end, they’ll get a chance to spend time away from their parents and become more independent.

For any parents preparing their kids for summer kamp, whether it’s the first time or the seventh time, it’s important to make sure they know what to expect! Have conversations about what summer kamp is like, talk about how you’ll stay in touch with each other, and get them excited about the kamp experience.
