An Arizona newborn has been given another chance at life after being rescued by local police. Police were called to perform a welfare check on the child’s mother and found the infant next to the mother’s lifeless body. Thanks to the quick action of police, the baby was given life-saving medical care. Authorities will continue to investigate what happened to the child’s mother, but the story highlights the importance of community and how it can be used to save lives.
The Phoenix Police Department released the body camera footage from the baby’s rescue, and officers can be seen looking through an open window. “Officers responded to a welfare check after neighbors hadn’t seen or heard from a mother and her newborn for several days,” the post explained.
After seeing something in the bedroom, police officers force their way into the home after not getting a response. That’s when they find the newborn on the bed “severely dehydrated and clinging to life,” the post shares.
Quickly, they get the baby into a stroller, bringing it outside where EMS is waiting. According to the post, the baby was “taken to a nearby hospital to recover.”
“The mother had passed away while the child was still on the bed, still curled up where the mother had left them,” Phoenix Police representative Sgt. Brian Bower told AZ Family. He explained that the welfare check was performed on May 14, 2025, after neighbors noticed packages piling up outside the door.
The officers said the baby was “visibly emaciated” upon discovery. “It wasn’t learned until well after the fact from doctors and staff at the hospital that if the police officers didn’t immediately provide aid and didn’t immediately go into the apartment, the child may not have survived much longer,” Bower said, per AZ Family.
Although the baby was taken to the hospital in “critical condition,” the infant is expected to make a full recovery. Bower praised the officers’ “smart, immediate actions” as well as neighbors for calling for help. Thanks to them, the Arizona newborn still has a chance at life.
The baby is now in the care of the Department of Child Safety. Phoenix police are still investigating what led to the mother’s death.
