Thanks to Reddit, we’ve heard just about every “crazy” mother-in-law story there is. From overstepping established boundaries to showing up completely uninvited, there are some unhinged MILs out there. However, some are so specific and so bizarre, you can’t help but laugh.
That is exactly what one Redditor is doing after her MIL informed her that she was “not OK” with how tall she is.
“I’m not ok with how tall you are.”

She began by explaining that she and her husband already have a moratorium on how much they will willingly interact with his mother, and it was about the time of year when they would make a reluctant visit.
“[We] only strive to see her once or twice per year,” she explained. “This was an event we were all invited to at a neutral space with lots of people, so it was a perfect choice for [dear husband] and I because we could easily limit our time with her.”
It was a semi-formal event, so the wife took it upon herself to dress in a gorgeous linen pantsuit and finish off the look with 4-inch heels.
“My mother in law has never seen me dressed that way in the 33 years she’s known me … these are not normal wardrobe items for me at all but I felt comfortable and confident in them … so she stopped what she was doing and looked me up and down several times before a look of distaste came across her face.”
After greeting her, the MIL turned to her friends and began chatting, completely ignoring the younger woman. So the wife began chatting with some other guests and to no one’s surprise, the MIL appeared jealous.
“Then MIL rejoined our group and looked at me disgustingly again and said, ‘You seem awfully tall.’ I replied that I am, and pulled up a flowy pant leg to flash my heels. She said, ‘Oh my! I’m actually jealous. I always wanted to be tall but just never bought the shoes.’ But she still wore a look of disdain on her face. Just then some good friends came up and the ladies were complimenting me on the pantsuit and being very gracious, while MIL just stood to the side and looked me up and down again with her sour face.”
It was then that one of the ladies asked to take a picture of her toes with her, as they had on matching nail polish. This sent the MIL into a tizzy and elicited a bizarre request.
“MIL pulled me to the side and said, ‘I have to demand that you throw your new shoes out as soon as this event is over.’ Confused, I asked, ‘Excuse me?’ She replied, ‘I insist you throw them out. I’m not ok with how tall you are. It’s not ok with me.’ I laughed in her face and said, ‘No. I’m keeping them.'”
Luckily, her husband supported his wife and the two decided that the brief but telling interaction definitely counted as one of their visits.
People online were so confused by the MIL’s audacity.
“She isn’t okay with how tall you are, as if she gets a say, or you could help it?” wrote one reader. “And she thinks she can demand you throw away your shoes? I’d buy more pairs of the same shoe in more colors after that.”
“Talk about jealous!!” added another. “She sounds like she was seething while her friends gave you compliments over your outfit and took pictures because you matched. Next time you see her, even in your own home or here, where the shoes proudly or, if you can, higher ones.”
Hopefully, the woman and her husband can continue to laugh off the crazy, and she can feel free to rock those 4-inch heels with zero shame.
