Kate Beckinsale is opening up about a very difficult time in her life in the hopes that it makes a difference for some of her younger followers. In a lengthy Instagram post, Kate detailed what went on behind closed doors in a former relationship of hers and all of the red flags she ignored while they were together, only to realize years later that he had been cheating on her and allegedly subjecting her to emotional and verbal abuse.
She talked about having a partner who was “incredibly mean” to her.
While reposting a video on Instagram of a woman talking about her own relationship with a narcissistic man earlier this week, Kate shared her own story in the caption.
“Sometimes you don’t find out what was going on in your relationship until years afterwards when you may even be married to somebody else,” Kate wrote, adding that the man she was with at the time started showing his true colors while she was pregnant and then, when she was giving birth.
She wrote that she had to “wake them up to tell them you’ve gone into labour and they decide to stay asleep and you’re 24, counting your contractions alone and they yell at you when you’re scared to have an epidural and spend the rest of the time asleep.”
She went on to accuse her former partner of cheating on her throughout their entire relationship, refusing to be happy for her accomplishments, and even banning her mother from the delivery room when she gave birth, even though she wanted her to be there.
She encouraged women in similar situations to “get out” as soon as possible.
“As an old lady I just want to tell women in their 20s and 30s what you are putting up with is not something that when you come into your full power as a woman you would put up with for one f—— second,” she continued. “That’s not even discussing other, worse relationships that cause you to develop autoimmune illnesses and cause serious, incredible damage but if somebody consistently puts you down — get out when you can, as-fast as possible let him exercise his narcissistic bulls— on somebody else and protect yourself and your kid. And get ready for the smear campaign.”
Fans are assuming the partner Kate is talking about is Michael Sheen.
Even though Kate didn’t mention her ex by name in her post, the details she did share seem to point to Michael Sheen, who she dated from 1995-2003. They also welcomed a child together, daughter Lily, during their relationship. Since Lily is Kate’s only child, who else could she be talking about?
So many people came to Kate’s defense in the comments, including those who have been in similar relationships themselves. One woman commented, “So many of these moments I [realized] when my marriage ended. Seeing it all with full clarity once i was away from the situation and its so true it is the death of a marriage by a thousand cuts.”
Kate responded to her, writing, “I am so sorry for your thousand cuts. I hope you have found your way to a place of gentleness and softness and safety after that experience.”
So far, Michael doesn’t appear to have responded to her claims.
