For some people in the spotlight, even when you’re pretty famous, there’s still no popularity contest happening because there’s just no competing with two uber famous women like Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson. On a recent episode of the podcast he does with his brother, Travis Kelce couldn’t help but ask their guest, Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost, about what it’s like to be the lesser famous person in his relationship. Colin has been married to Scarlett for six years and Travis knows a thing or two about fame due to being engaged to Taylor.
And they both agree that it’s great being the less famous partner in their respective relationships.
On the May 13 episode of New Heights, Jason and Travis Kelce were able to chat with “Weekend Update” host, Colin Jost from Saturday Night Live. Their conversation took a funny turn when Travis decided to bring up something that some people might have clocked but not properly articulated until now.
Initially, Travis makes that connection with Colin by referring to himself as a member of the “plus one fraternity.” If you don’t quite get what that means, he then asked Colin, “How nice is it to be the less famous person in the relationship?” With a straight face that quickly turned into a smile, Colin replied, “Huge relief, really.” It would seem that these men are routinely on the arm of their partners and perhaps not the ones invited to big events themselves.
People don’t always give Travis credit for his cleverness, but this was a fairly astute observation about how neither man can truly compete with their romantic partners as far as celebrity status is concerned.
Colin shared that he’s actually approached way more than his famous wife.
Colin went on to share that when it comes to fans recognizing and approaching the couple when they’re out and about, he actually wins in that category. He told Travis and Jason that “it’s really funny because I’m probably almost approached more because she’s less approachable. Because I’m on TV. I’m in their living room, so they’re just like, ‘Hey, what’s up man? How’s it going?'”
The Saturday Night Live star also divulged that when fans happen to come across his wife, she’s “so famous” that most can’t actually determine that it’s really her. “We’ve been traveling and we’ve been standing at the passport check and the person’s looking at her passport and he’ll be like, ‘Has anyone ever told you you look like Scarlett Johansson?'” he shared. Colin told the guys that he thinks “it’s really kind of awesome.”
Speaking of romantic partners, it’s interesting to think about who Scarlett’s previous husband was and how he possibly would have related to her ever expanding fame. Some people in this Reddit thread feel as though actor Ryan Reynolds may not have been as appreciative as Colin is.
Someone in the thread wrote, “Woof the irony of Jost appearing on New Heights is not lost on me, 😬 I recall articles where ScarJo said the demise of her marriage to Reynolds had to do with their careers competing for attention. I also remember photos from when she won a Tony award (while they were still married) and I’ve never seen them appear more stilted 😳 you could just tell their divorce was coming.”
As far as Scarlett is concerned, she’s openly discussed how important a work-life balance is for her.
If you think about fame and celebrity in terms of net worth, Colin’s wife, Scarlett Johansson is absolutely killing it. According to Fortune, she has a $165 million net worth that’s been accumulated through her long film career, starting her skincare brand, and various campaigns she’s been a part of over the years, including fashion powerhouse Dolce & Gabbana.
She recently admitted, “I think actually admitting that there is no work-life balance is the first step to getting there in a way because it’s just not possible,” per Fortune. When it comes to her career and her marriage, she knows that there’s going to be a “deficit” in there somewhere because she can only be stretched in so many ways. She shared, “I’ve learned to be more kind to myself in that way. You can’t do all of these things all the time.”
Thinking about Scarlett’s massive net worth along with Taylor Swift’s — which sits around a whopping $2 billion — it’s no wonder these men are a-okay with being the lesser known person in their relationships! Seriously, where do we sign up?
