What to Know
There was a good while there when singer Taylor Swift was fairly synonymous with sourdough bread. She was talking about it in interviews and some of her famous friends have even been spotted carrying loaves of it home with them after a night out with the singer. Speaking of sourdough bread, some Kansas City Chiefs fans are pointing directly to the “All Too Well” singer as being the source of inspiration for the team’s recent social media post that has not gone over great.
The marketing team for the Kansas City Chiefs came up with a very … interesting concept for their socials.
If you’ve ever wondered what a loaf of sourdough bread might look like alongside some ribs and barbecue sauce, the new Kansas City Chiefs social media campaign shared on X gives you a pretty good look.
As a fun way to unveil their 2026 schedule that’s sure to keep people guessing — and a few of them hungry — the Kansas City Chiefs marketing team dropped a series of social media posts featuring football-themed loaves of sourdough.
Their caption for the post reads, “Presenting our 2026 opponents as sourdough… a bread thread if you will. Starting saucy with KC BBQ…” Each post shares a clue and a playful image of a sourdough or some other related picture that was surely made to keep fans guessing. For instance, they added a bunch of clams to their sourdough in which the New England Patriots are tagged. Clever, right?
Well, there are some online who are just not loving this concept.
Some sports fans are making the direct connection to Taylor Swift and they’re not thrilled.
Of course, due to Travis Kelce being engaged to Taylor Swift, some fans are going to immediately make a connection. Not only has Taylor discussed a love of baking sourdough bread on Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast, New Heights, but she even baked a loaf to appear in the “Fate of Ophelia” music video.
To put things lightly, a lot of dedicated and longtime Kansas City Chiefs fans are not thrilled with this correlation, especially considering this unique social media campaign. One person shared in the X comments, “Pandering to Swift fans how embarrassing is this s—.” Another person shared their secondhand embarrassment, “Season hasn’t started and they are already laughing at us. Thanks. Hope the intern that pitched this has a backup internship lined up.”
Another individual in the X comments wondered if this came from Taylor herself. “Taylor why you on the chiefs account,” they mused. Another person thinks that they need to separate the football fans from Swifties completely here. “Nothing against Swift and Swifties- but we have got to separate Chiefs and that. Please for the love of Chiefs and the sourdough community. This was unfortunately ‘under proofed,'” they shared.
Fair enough.
Others are just completely bashing this attempt in hopes that they’ll re-release the football schedule in some other way.
Let’s just say that the comments section on this X post is not filled with kind comments and words of encouragement.
Some commenters are wondering how something like this even got approved for social media. “The internet is forever, but you guys should still shame delete this and do something else, after firing your entire social media team who green lit this idea,” they wrote.
Another individual was hopeful that the team would formally announce their 2026 schedule in some other way. “God…. please say this is just a joke and not how you guys plan to release the schedule,” they shared. Another person felt bad knowing that the internet is permanent and you really can’t erase things. They wrote, “I wonder if the social admin knows they just created something that will echo for eternity on this app.”
One person in the comments at least tried to appreciate the team’s attempt with a clever retort. “You need to put this garbage back in the oven and cook up a better way to present the schedule. This was terrible,” they wrote.
What are your thoughts? Are you offended because it looks like every image was made by AI or because Taylor Swift likely encouraged this interesting social media campaign?
