What to Know
Nearly two decades ago, fans watched Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra place their first biological daughter, Carly, for adoption on 16 & Pregnant and followed along with their journey on Teen Mom in the years since. But after what started as an open adoption turned into much less contact between the couple and Carly than they hoped for, it’s brought on a lot of drama… and even now, Catelynn and Tyler aren’t letting it go.
Despite their claims that they’ve put a moratorium on posts about Carly many times in the past, they’re back with a new post in honor of her birthday, and the backlash they’re getting from their critics is some truly brutal stuff.
Catelynn and Tyler shared a video dedicated to Carly.
In a post that they shared on their official Facebook fan page, they included a video montage of their moments with Carly over the years, from the day she was born to their meet ups with her as she grew up, though they haven’t seen her in person in several years.
“17 years ago at 10:39am you took your first breath. I can’t believe you are 17 years old today,” Catelynn wrote in the post. “The day you were born my life changed forever. I knew from the moment I held you that you would always be one of the greatest blessings in my life. As you turn 17, I hope you know how loved you are and how proud I am of you. Never stop believing in yourself and chasing your dreams. The world is so much better because you are in it.”
She added, “Happy 17th birthday. I love you more than words could ever explain.”
Teen Mom fans are lighting Cate and Tyler up in the comments.
While Catelynn and Tyler may have gotten some of the kinder comments they expected on their Facebook post, things were quite different on Reddit, where fans were ready to take the two to task over the fact that they are speaking about Carly publicly when it’s been clear for a while that Carly’s parents would rather they maintain her privacy.
“They piss me off,” one person wrote. “Why do they need to make a public post about this? After everything that has gone down? Cate needs to stop seeking validation from strangers on the internet and fix her relationship with herself. Carly is going to hate these two if they don’t stop.”
Another person called the post a grab for more “engagement” on social media, writing, “The way they do this for engagement only is just so gross. They don’t have a show anymore and are desperate to stay relevant 🤦🏻♀️. They are so lucky that she was adopted by a couple who have blessed her with a wonderful, stable life and they should be rejoicing that and respecting her privacy. She barely knows these people.”
Carly’s parents have cut off all communication with Catelynn and Tyler.
While on the Cake for Dinner podcast in April, Tyler said that they still aren’t in contact with Carly, though they do write her letters to an email account he can hand over to her one day if she decides she wants to read their messages.
“Me and Cate accept the fact that she may get older and want nothing to do with us,” he said. “She might not even like us, which is okay. As her birth parent, my duty is to be there to answer the questions she has as an adoptee. I think she’s owed that.”
