It’s a tale as old as time: A mother doesn’t appear to get along with her son’s significant other. We’ve all seen it happen — if not in your personal life, then you definitely know someone who has an MIL from hell — but what if this time, the mother-in-law was actually right? That’s what some people are saying after a video of a mom kicking her son’s girlfriend out of the front seat went viral, and the debate on this topic is getting some people heated.
The video shows a tense moment playing out in the driveway.
In the video, everyone’s getting in the car to go somewhere: mom, son, girlfriend, and a little boy. As the little boy gets in the backseat, the girlfriend sits down in the front seat on the passenger side, and it’s clear from her body language that Mom expected to sit there and is instantly taken aback to see that her son’s girlfriend sat down without saying anything to anyone. And boy, is she pissed.
“I’m not sitting in the backseat. You need to get out,” she says.
The girlfriend replies, “I’m not gonna sit in the backseat,” to which mom replies, “you’re gonna sit in the backseat today. You need to get out.”
It seemed to be NBD to the son.

To the son, this is a no brainer — either he is of the mind that Mom, as the most senior person on their outing, should have been offered the front seat out of respect, or he’s simply a mama’s boy (which would be much worse).
But after it becomes clear he’s taking his mom’s side, his girlfriend is really not happy. So yes, she does get out of the front seat, as Mom requested, but she also decided she’s not going to go at all. “It’s not that deep. Just sit in the backseat!” her boyfriend tells her. Wow, it’s shocking that argument didn’t immediately change her mind!
It could have ended there, but Mom wasn’t going to let it go. As the girlfriend walks away, she’s calling after her to remind her that they’re not married. Wait, so if they were married, Mom would have just sat in the backseat without causing a scene?
This is nothing new to the son, though, who can be heard saying, “boy oh boy” as he gets into the driver’s seat. I’m sure that was a fun conversation with his GF later…
Most people seem to be on Mom’s side.
Judging by the comments, a lot of people are taking Mom’s side, even if they don’t like the way she handled the situation.
“It was the mom’s approach. She could have talked to her with a better tone and attitude. There is a way to talk to people to get better results,” one person wrote.
“GF deserves a better family with class and respect,” another added.
One person actually blamed the son for this, and they might have a point: “The son should’ve handled this from the beginning. He knows his mom, she doesn’t.”
It can never hurt to offer your mother-in-law the front seat before automatically assuming you’ll sit there as usual… but if you have a MIL who is committed to the drama, she might find something else to pick a fight with you about instead. This was not an interaction between two people who usually get along well.
