Police in Canada Search for Newborn Baby After Mom Showed Up at Hospital in Life-Threatening Condition

Staff at a Canadian hospital knew something was wrong when Ramandeep Kaur arrived at the hospital on May 22, 2026. The 26-year-old woman arrived in life-threatening condition and appeared to have recently given birth to a baby, but she didn’t have an infant with her. Staff contacted police in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a team immediately began searching for the newborn. Two days after Kaur arrived at the hospital, police located her newborn baby’s remains. Kaur and her husband, 23-year-old Sukhpreet Singh, now face charges in the baby’s death.

Kaur arrived at the hospital in extremely poor health.

According to a release from Halifax Regional Police, hospital staff contacted authorities about the missing newborn around 9:40 p.m. Police and Nova Scotia Ground Search and Rescue immediately began looking for the infant near 214 Willet Street. When they did not find the baby, they asked anyone in the area to search their property and to contact the police with any information.

The search continued for days.

Police questioned Singh, Kaur, and two other people in connection with the missing infant, CTV News reported. On May 24, police reportedly received new information leading them to Prospect Road, where they found the infant’s remains in a wooded area. Police questioned four people but released two of them. Kaur and Singh remain in custody.

Kaur and Singh face multiple charges.

Kaur and Singh had a scheduled court appointment for May 25. They each face charges of concealing the body of a child, obstruction, and indignity to a dead body. The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service will conduct an autopsy to determine the infant’s cause of death. The investigation continues, and the couple could face additional charges.

The story saddened law enforcement personnel.

The death of a child is never easy. In these situations, first responders must set aside their own feelings and emotions to help bring justice. We cannot imagine how it must feel to find a brand-new baby’s remains seemingly tossed away as if it’s nothing.

“Moments like this are among the most difficult for first responders. We feel the weight of this loss and are grieving with the community while working tirelessly to find answers,” MacLean said, per CTV News. “My sincere thanks go out to the officers and ground search and rescue teams for their dedication throughout this challenging search. I urge people to take care of themselves and reach out for support if they need it.”

Halifax Regional Police Chief Don MacLean shared condolences with the infant’s family in a news release.

It’s not clear if the parents experienced a mental health emergency or if leaving the infant’s remains was part of an intentional plan. Only time will tell.
