Blake Lively Apologizes for Kate Middleton Jokes After Cancer Diagnosis

With people still reeling from Kate Middleton's announcement, some celebrities are backpedaling when it comes to their recent jokes about the royal family now that the news is out about her cancer diagnosis. Blake Lively was among the first people to apologize for her joke involving Kate's photoshopping incident, and Stephen Colbert quickly joined the charge. Now, plenty of others are beginning to come forward to apologize for making light of a situation that has turned out to be a very serious one.

Kate Middleton revealed last week that she's been diagnosed with cancer.

In an emotional video she shared on Friday, Kate revealed that post-operative tests following her recent abdominal surgery revealed that cancer had been present in her body. She is now undergoing "preventative chemotherapy" and will continue to remain out of the public eye as she goes through treatment.

Before Kate's announcement, memes about her disappearance were everywhere.

Celebrities got in on the trend, including Blake, whose drink company, Betty Buzz, shared a photo that mocked Kate's admittedly altered Mother's Day photo with a very clearly photoshopped picture of her own that included a lemon in mid-air.

But as soon as the news was out, Blake took to her Instagram Stories to apologize.

"I'm sure no one cares today but I feel like I have to acknowledge this," she wrote. "I made a silly post around the 'photoshop fails' frenzy, and oh man, that post has me mortified today. I'm sorry. Sending love and well wishes to all, always."

Stephen Colbert has also issued an apology.

Earlier this month, Stephen joked about the rumors that Prince William was cheating on Kate and why she hadn't been seen in public for so long, and as Good Morning America pointed out, now, he's taking it back.

"I don't know whether her prognosis is a tragic one … but regardless of what it is, I know, and I'm sure many of you, far too many of us know that any cancer diagnosis of any kind is harrowing for the patient and for their family," he said on Monday night's episode. "And though I'm sure they don't need it from me, I and everyone here at 'The Late Show' would like to extend our well wishes and heartfelt note that her recovery is swift and thorough."

They aren't the only ones apologizing.

The hosts of The View also apologized for participating in the speculation, with Alyssa Farah Griffin admitted they should have listened to cohost Whoopi Goldberg when she advised them to lay off.

"I felt awful. Whoopi was right. I’m guilty of having gotten into the fun of where’s Kate and thinking it’s funny and sharing the memes and playing into that," she said.
