When Robert F. Kennedy Jr. first announced that he was suspending his presidential campaign and backing President Donald Trump, many wondered how his wife, Cheryl Hines, felt about that. But her recent appearances make it pretty clear that she’s standing by her husband, who is now secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. During an appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, Hines seemed to suggest that Republicans are more tolerant of differing opinions than Democrats are.
The topic came up when Maher listed some of the things he doesn’t like about Trump. Maher claimed that although there’s a lot that he “hates” about Trump and “plenty to complain about,” he argued that Trump “is willing to listen.” (He did admit that Trump can definitely be sensitive to criticism). “He will yell at me, but does not want to cut me off,” Maher argued. “He does not want to cut me off, which is something I cannot say about the Left.”
Interestingly, Hines agreed with this take. She claimed that Republicans have always been accepting of her in a way that Democrats have not. “That is true,” she told Maher. “The Republicans have been very kind to me from the beginning. Even from the beginning when Bobby was running as a Democrat, they weren’t mean. And they never have been. And I can’t say that for the Democrats.”
During the podcast, Maher and Hines also talked about Hines’ former Curb Your Enthusiasm costar, Larry David. Previously, David published a short story called Larry David: My Dinner with Adolf, clearly mocking Maher’s dinner with Trump. Speaking to Hines, Maher said, “I got the same kind of shit you did when I went to dinner (with Trump), from your TV husband especially.”
Hines called the short story “crazy,” adding, “He came after you.” Maher went on to say, “Once you play that Hitler card, first of all, you lost me. First of all, (coming) from a Jew, it’s so insulting to anyone who was actually affected by the Holocaust.” Maher also explained that he has continued to be critical of Trump despite joining him for dinner.
Hines responded with, “The fact that you shared the same air was enough to make people crazy.” Oof.
