Grimes Responds After Fans Call Her Out for Failing To Denounce Ex Elon Musk

Grimes is making it clear: She doesn’t want to release a statement every time her controversial ex does something. After many people interpreted Elon Musk’s gesture at an inauguration event as a Nazi salute, some Grimes fans hoped that she would publicly call him out. The 36-year-old musician started dating Elon Musk in 2018 and they had an on-again, off-again relationship for several years. They’re no longer together, but they do share three children.

Grimes fans asked her what she thought about the Nazi salute controversy.

On X (formerly Twitter), several Grimes fans pushed the singer to say something about Elon’s inauguration salute.

“Hey Grimes, how do you feel about the father of your children sieg heiling on national tv today?” one person wrote on the platform.

“I’m more than willing so sacrifice my grimes follow and get a tattoo coverup for this btw,” a second fan wrote. “I’m hitting a breaking point.”

Responding directly to a fan, Grimes wrote, ‘I am not him.’

Early in the morning on January 21, Grimes wrote, “While I deeply respect your concern- it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now.” She added that she wasn’t aware of what had happened, is not a United States citizen, and didn’t want to “make a rash statement.”

“It’s absurd that someone can be this cancelled for something their ex did before they even heard it happened,” Grimes continued. “I am not him. I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting.”

She later responded to another fan who pushed her to say more.

After Grimes explained that she didn’t want to release a statement, another fan urged her to “denounce all the alt-right/Nazi’s that feel comfortable in your comments.”

“We understand that you are unwilling to directly talk about his actions,” the fan acknowledged. Replying to the fan directly, Grimes wrote that she was “happy to denounce Nazi-ism — and the far alt right.”

At the time, Grimes wrote that she was ‘still debating how to approach things diplomatically.’

“I’ve just gotten out of breakfast and have to catch a flight, and am still debating how to approach things diplomatically because I feel in over my head,” Grimes explained on X. “But if there’s concern about that, I am happy to set the record strait in a meaningful way. If I don’t respond for another 5 hrs it’s cus there’s no wifi on my flight.”

Writing back, the fan told her that making a public statement “would be very much appreciated.”

At the same time, another fan was “happy” to see Grimes denounce Nazis and the alt-right. “I know you’re not your ex, but I think we’re all happy to see you say this,” they wrote. “It gives peace of mind to me as a hardcore fan of you, even though he’s not your responsibility.”

Previously, Grimes hinted at her ex becoming ‘unrecognizable.’

After Grimes and Elon resolved their custody battle, Grimes shared a somewhat cryptic post about how it impacted her. “Spent a year locked in battle in a state with terrible mothers rights having my Instagram posts and modeling used as reasons I shouldn’t have my kids,” she wrote on X in November 2024. She said her tumultuous custody battle involved “fighting and detaching from the love of my life as he becomes unrecognizable to me, with a fraction of his resources (or iq/strategy experience), all the while I didn’t see one of my babies for 5 months.”

At the time, some fans wondered whether Grimes’ post about her ex becoming “unrecognizable” had anything to do with Elon’s shift toward right-wing politics and involvement with President Donald Trump.
