What to Know
All moms have their own ways of doling out discipline when the time comes, but one celebrity mom in particular is facing backlash after opening up about the rules in her house.
During a new episode of the New Heights podcast, Kylie Kelce revealed that she washes her daughters’ mouths out with soap if they use a curse word, and while some people are praising her parenting tips, others are really not impressed — some even going so far as to call it “abuse.”
Kylie opened up about the punishment on New Heights.
Kylie isn’t shy about cursing in front of the kids she shares with Jason Kelce, but she does want them to know that they aren’t allowed to do the same, according to what she said during her appearance on her husband’s podcast.
While telling a story about her 6-year-old daughter, Wyatt, dropping the “b” word one day, Kylie revealed that she washed her mouth out with soap.
“I don’t know that she got it that time because she had buyer’s remorse very quickly, but she has gotten it before, which is how she knows I’m not joking about a bar of soap,” Kylie said, adding, “You can’t do empty threats, that’s what you can’t do with it, it’s a waste of time.”
Some people called the punishment “abuse.”
As the Daily Mail pointed out, one person responded to Kylie’s punishment pretty harshly in a post on X, writing, “Kylie Kelce putting soap in her kids’ mouth is beyond repulsive. It’s literally abusive.”
Parenting experts also tend to look down upon the practice — as common as this punishment may have been in the past. The website Family Education actually described it as cruelty, and once, a Florida mom was arrested after forcing her daughter to keep a bar of soap in her mouth, which lead to the little girl being hospitalized.
Other fans came to her defense, though.
In the comments on the YouTube video, some listeners praised Kylie’s parenting, especially when it comes to her point about not making empty threats.
“As a teacher, almost all my behavioral problem kids come from households with terrible empty threats,” one commenter wrote. “It’s one of the worst ways to parent, but shocking so many parents do it. Back up every discipline lesson or privilege taken away with action every time. Think about whether you can do it, before you say it. Kylie won’t have kids with these types of problems because she nabs the behavioral issues before they become a problem, and Jason backs her up.”
Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like this is a punishment that Kylie enforces all that often (especially since most of her four daughters are still very young). Maybe, just the threat of it will be enough to keep her girls on the straight and narrow.
