In response to her recent comments about money, critics are urging Meghan Markle to read the room. On the May 27 episode of her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast, the Duchess of Sussex said that money can be difficult for women to talk about — especially because “having a lot” of it can make people feel guilty. The comments led some critics to wonder whether Meghan was implying that she has a substantial amount of money.
On the episode, Meghan spoke to Sara Blakely.
Sara founded Spanx, which later made her a billionaire. Meanwhile, Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, have an estimated net worth of $60 million, according to Page Six.
In Meghan’s opinion, having this much money can be challenging to talk about. “I think so many women, especially, we’re taught to not even talk about money, and there’s lots of guilt mentality surrounding having a lot,” Meghan said on the podcast.
Even for those who have a lot of money, it never feels like enough.
Some critics thought Meghan seemed to be implying that she’s wealthy. Meghan also went on to say that it’s hard to ever feel like you have enough money. “At the same time, there’s a scarcity mindset that it’s easy to attach to, of like, ‘I’ll never have enough,'” she said.
Meghan and Sara seemed to be talking about “financial freedom” in general, but the comments didn’t land very well, due to their privilege.
People accused Meghan of humble-bragging.
While Meghan didn’t outright claim to be rich, a lot of critics read between the lines and assumed that Meghan was talking about her own finances.
“The epitome of a humble brag, eh?” one critic on Reddit wrote. Another person commented, “this woman has to have one of the worst room-reading abilities ever witnessed by human eyeballs.”
After Meghan’s Netflix show, With Love, Meghan came out, she was criticized for seeming out of touch and promoting a lifestyle that was not realistic or relatable for the average person. Because of their perception of Meghan, some critics were not convinced that she actually feels “guilty” for having money.
“MM feels so guilty about having money that she constantly wears a wrist of luxury branded gold and diamond rings on both hands – even while gardening or visiting a city destroyed by fire,” one Redditor sarcastically pointed out.
Another critic claimed, “I know Meghan doesn’t feel guilty about anything. This is just a way of showing off her ‘I’m so rich’ lifestyle to try to attract investors and useful idiots who still think the couple is profitable.”
Others did come to her defense, though. “She’s saying women do feel guilt over having a lot but she isn’t like that and doesn’t, and doesn’t want others to feel badly either,” one explained. “In no way do I read her sentences as an admission of that guilt or that she’s even referencing herself.”
Some critics took it a step further and said Meghan is not as rich as she appears to think she is.
Several people who reacted to Meghan’s recent podcast episode were of the opinion that if Meghan were doing well financially, she wouldn’t need to flaunt her wealth.
“She’s cosplaying being rich,” one critic alleged. Another naysayer seemed to agree, writing: “I honestly think they’re running OUT of money relative to the lifestyle they lead. Whatever they say, you can be sure the opposite is true.”
