Naming a baby comes with a lot of pressure — and not just when it comes to picking the perfect name for your child to carry with them for the rest of their life. It also comes with the worry of what the people in your life will think of your chosen name, and that’s exactly why Meghan Markle is sharing her baby naming advice with the world.
After all, is there any pressure greater than choosing a name for the newest member of the British royal family?
The Duchess of Sussex shared her take on baby names on her podcast.
On this week’s new episode of Meghan’s Confessions of a Female Founder podcast, she spoke with Spanx founder Sara Blakely, who is also a mom.
While talking about finding the perfect name for a company, Meghan brought up just how similar it can be to naming an actual human, along with the one piece of advice she wishes every expectant parent could truly take to heart.
“It’s no different — I will say this to every woman in the world or every person in the world who’s going to have a child — if you have an idea about what you are going to name that baby, you keep it so close to your heart, until that baby is born and it’s named,” Meghan said. “Don’t ask anyone’s opinion.”
Even she isn’t immune to the pressure, though.
Meghan admitted that it can be hard not to ask people to share their thoughts on things like baby names and upcoming career moves because it’s only natural to seek approval.
“I think everyone is so scared, especially as we get older,” she said. “You’re so scared of making a mistake, you’re so scared of doing it wrong, you’re so scared of not getting everyone’s approval.”
She did break her own rule once.
But to be totally fair, it’s not like she had much of a choice!
Before Meghan and husband Prince Harry settled on the name Lilibet for their daughter, they did check with the late Queen Elizabeth first, seeing as it was her nickname and all.
“The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement, in fact, his grandmother was the first family member he called,” a spokesperson for Meghan and Harry said at the time, via People. “During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honor. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”
