More than a year after Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas went their separate ways, the former Game of Thrones star is reflecting on what it’s like to raise their two daughters as a single mom. In a new interview, Sophie said that it’s a “struggle” to be a single mother — something she has now done on stage and on the screen in her new series, Joan.

Sophie talked about being a single mom while promoting her new TV series.
The series, which premieres on The CW on October 2, is based on the true story of diamond thief Joan Hannington. Sophie plays the title role and was filming the show during her very public split from Joe last year.
“The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces,” Sophie told The Times. “She gave me a lot of strength.”
A big part of Joan's story is that she is a single mother.
She begins a life of theft in order to create a comfortable life for her 4-year-old daughter after leaving an abusive relationship, and the fact that Sophie happens to be a single mom herself now helped her tackle the role.
“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it,” she said.
Sophie shares two daughters with ex-husband Joe: Willa and Delphine.
She acknowledged the 'struggle' of being a single mom.
“It’s such a struggle being a single mother,” Sophie said, admitting that though “Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way,” it was still “amazing” to see how hard she fought for her daughter.
She added, “It’s also really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them.”

Sophie also shared what it was like to finish filming the series with her kids living on another continent.
While Sophie finished up filming Joan in the UK, her daughters were back in the US with their dad, which wasn’t easy for her. Fortunately, Sophie made a friend on set she could lean on.
“She ended up staying with me at mine, because I didn’t want to be alone,” she said. “The crew really held me through it, and I didn’t ever come home alone at the end of the day.”
Later, Sophie shared a follow-up to her statement about single motherhood.
In a post she shared on her Instagram Stories on Monday, Sophie clarified that she knows that as far as single moms go, she’s lucky.
“I am very fortunate personally to have a lot of help around me, which is not the case for a lot of people,” she wrote. “I applaud all single mothers doing it alone.”
