When fans were first introduced to Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra on MTV’s 16 & Pregnant back in 2009, they watched as the couple decided to place their daughter, Carly, for adoption rather than becoming parents themselves at the age of 16. Though Catelynn and Tyler appeared to have a good relationship with Carly and her parents, Brandon and Teresa Davis, through the years, more recently, things between them have gone downhill. And now, Catelynn is saying that she’s totally lost contact with Carly.

In a new interview with E! News, Catelynn said that Brandon and Teresa have now “have 100 percent closed the adoption,” and she doesn’t have access to Carly at all.
“I’m still blocked and they recently told me to quit sending gifts because it was inappropriate and uncalled for, just a whole bunch of things,” she said.
Fans of Teen Mom already know that even though Catelynn and Tyler didn’t have very frequent visits with Carly as she grew up, they did see her every so often, especially as their daughters were born and became interested in meeting their older biological sister. But things haven’t been going smoothly between Catelynn, Tyler, and Carly’s parents for a long time.
And as Catelynn and Tyler told the news outlet, this has led them both to wonder if this change is because it’s what Carly wants or if it’s what her parents want.
“Because if it’s Carly not wanting contact, it would hurt, but we would understand and say, ‘Hey, if you ever want to have it, we’re here and we totally understand that all of this could be hard for you,'” Catelynn said.
“If it’s just her parents acting out of fear, it’s my duty as a birth mom to show this child that I’m continuously fighting for communication, because that’s what’s ultimately the best for her, if that’s what she wants,” Catelynn said.
She’s hoping to be able to show that adoption isn’t “cupcakes and rainbows,” but instead, “there’s trauma, there is hurt, there’s sadness, there’s what ifs, there’s so many hard sides of it too.”

Catelynn admitted that, as a teenager, she wasn’t “fully educated me on the whole scope of the decision,” and that now, she hopes that by speaking up and continuing to share her family’s adoption experience on Teen Mom, she can help others not to be “blindsided” the way that she was.
In the meantime, Catelynn told E! she is open to whatever relationship that now 15-year-old Carly wants to have with her in the future.
“Whether she just wants a relationship with her biological siblings, if she wants to have a relationship with us, awesome. If she doesn’t, totally understand,” she said. “Whatever that looks like for her. Because it needs to be adoptee-centered.”
As she and Tyler continue to raise their daughters Nova, Vaeda, and Rya, they’re planning to remain “open and honest” with them about where things stand with Carly, too.
“I do think that it is hard when they ask questions like, ‘Why aren’t we seeing her?’ Because that, in turn, affects them too,” she said.
