No matter how much you love your significant other, sometimes their parents can be … a handful, to say the least. Dealing with in-laws isn't always easy — especially if they're nosy or overbearing or, as one woman on Reddit recently shared, have ZERO boundaries with you and your spouse. In the anonymous post, one woman vented about her often inappropriate MIL, but says things really got strange when she recently told her that she got her son a stripper for his 21st birthday.
In her Reddit post, the woman admitted that her mother-in-law has a long history of oversharing.
Still, nothing has ever reached this level of awkward.
"According to my MIL, it was supposed to be a two-part party," the woman explained. "The first half was the family part and the second would be just his friends."
But of course, what kind of 21st birthday would it be if there wasn't a saucy party cake ... from your mother?
"Who orders him a cake in the shape of a naked woman to share with the family?" the woman wrote. "[My] MIL. Who ordered him a stripper to share with his friends after the party? She did."
"I knew some of the details beforehand since Dear Husband has shared how awkward the whole ordeal was," the woman continued. Still, she had "no idea" that her mother-in-law ordered the stripper.
"I assumed his dad was the one to do it," she explained.
But nope, it was his mom.
"She openly bragged about it," the woman continued. "I was horrified and told her how creepy that was. She didn’t see how it was creepy or inappropriate. It took several minutes of back and forth to finally let it sink in."
Many people instantly felt the writer's pain, and chimed in with their own tales of embarrassing MILs.
"My MIL ordered Playboy and similar magazines for my husband … and kept renewing them long after we were married," one woman wrote. "He said the conversation about it with her to get her to stop was super awkward. I’m glad I wasn’t there."
Another wrote: "My MIL paid one of the people who worked in her office to belly dance at my husband’s med school graduation party specifically for him. It could have been done tastefully … but it wasn’t."
For another commenter, it was her own mother who was the problem.
"My own mum ordered a stripper for my 21st," the woman shared. "I’m a girl. … it was mortifying."
But mostly, people were mortified for the poster's husband.
"I want to curl up into a ball and hibernate from second-hand embarrassment right now," one person wrote. "Your poor husband!"
In a later update, the Reddit poster shared that her MIL still didn't seem to understand why it was so strange.
"She kept trying to defend why she did it," the redditor shared. "We finally had to explain we understand it came from a place of love, but it still doesn’t make it any less creepy."
Oof, creepy indeed.
That is one conversation that must have been extremely uncomfortable — for everyone involved. Here's hoping the mom finally gets the message (and doesn't repeat the offense on her son's 40th birthday).
