Despite its progress over the years, the fashion industry is still the worst. A size 0 or 2 is still considered "sample size," even though the average American woman is a size 16, and most mainstream designers still don't carry anything above a size 10 or 12. It's shameful, to say the least. And when it comes to dressing celebrities for events, these designers pick and choose whom they deem worthy of wearing their creations.
Singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha is dealing with the industry's faults firsthand in preparation for her first Grammy Awards as a nominee. As it turns out, her body is allegedly "too big" for some designers, and she's continuously being shut down because she's not "runway" size. And let's just say she has some harsh words for them.
Bebe Rexha has been killing it in the music world for a decade, but many people just got hip in 2018.
In fact, before most people knew her name, she was writing songs for many mainstream artists, like Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas, and Eminem.
But the girl has some stellar pipes of her own and finally released her debut studio album Expectations in June of last year.
"You know what? To the world, to certain people, I am a new artist, and that’s how you gotta think about it every day, y’know? You gotta work to be the best that you can be and not get too jaded and think that you’re the s**t," Rexha told ABC Radio.
Rexha's decade of hard work finally paid off this past year, and on February 10, she'll attend her first Grammys as a nominee for Best New Artist and Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
Obviously, it's a huge night for her, so she wants to look her best. But she says that many designers she's reached out to have refused to dress her because she's "too big," according to their standards.
Clearly fed up, she took to social media to voice her concerns with the fashion industry.
"So I finally get nominated at the Grammys, and it’s like the coolest thing ever," Rexha told her followers. "And a lot of times artists will go and talk to designers, and they’ll make them custom dresses to walk the red carpet, right? Like, you go to any big designer. So I had my team hit out a lot of designers, and a lot of them do not want to dress me because I’m too big. Literally, like, I’m too big."
She continued by giving a huge middle finger to those designers.
"If a size 6/8 is too big, then I don’t know what to tell you," she continued. "Then I don’t want to wear your fucking dresses because that’s crazy ’cause you’re saying that all the women in the world that are a size 8 and up are not beautiful and they cannot wear your dresses. So to all the people who said I’m thick and I can’t wear your dresses, fuck you, I don’t want to wear your fucking dresses."
Her fans are all a bit confused that designers would refuse to dress someone as talented and beautiful as their "queen."
But, alas, the fashion industry is cruel and unexplainable.
Regardless of their confusion, however, fans are sending Rexha all their love and support.
"This is why I fucking love you! PREACH!" one follower wrote.
Even actress Mayim Bialik came to Rexha's defense, saying she, too, is a size 8 and is sending her a hug.
Bialik also noted that Adena Rohatiner "has no problem dressing my size 8 ass" and that she's sure she'd love to hear from Rexha.
Young designer August Getty also reached out to Rexha, offering to dress her for the Grammy Awards.
"You are beautiful!" he wrote. "Every woman of every size is beautiful! Just let me know when I should start sketching."
Sherri Hill, a designer who specializes in evening wear, also offered up her talents for Rexha's Grammy look.
"We dress ALL sizes. Happy to make you a gorgeous custom gown for this or any future events," Hill wrote to the singer.
Many others told Rexha to hit up Christian Siriano, who is known for his inclusive sizing.
"Anyone call @CSiriano yet?" one Twitter user asked.
And of course, Siriano replied to everyone's requests, saying he and Rexha have actually worked together in the past.
"Thanks everyone for the love! We have dressed @BebeRexha a few times and would love to do it again!" he wrote back on Twitter.
There's no word yet on which designer Rexha will choose, but we're happy to know there are at least some inclusive designers out there who are willing to dress all types of bodies.
And in case you ever forget, Rexha wants you to know that "you are perfect" and "f**k Hollywood."
Find out which designer steps up, and whether Rexha will take home some awards when the ceremony airs February 10 on CBS.
In the meantime, follow Rexha's advice and "make today your bitch."
