Goths and dark wizards, rejoice — black lipstick is officially back, and it's better than ever.
"But how do I pull it off as an adult?" I hear you asking. Wonder no longer. I'm going to show you how to wear black lipstick in three actual, real-life ways. Prepare to look elegant AF.
First, watch the full video to see me in all my strange and unusual glory.
Now here's how to create each of the looks — and all the products I used!
Just because I love you.
I used the same lipstick for all three looks: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in Black Satin.
Black Satin ($20, Sephora) has a really nice, even coverage and super intense color with a subtle satin finish. It's the best black lipstick I've ever tried, and I highly recommend it.
Look #1: Everyday matte.
Matte black lips and highlighted skin are a match made in heaven. I mean, hell. Hail Satan?
Step 1: Highlight the shit out of your face.
Apply a highlighter one shade lighter than your complexion along the top parts of your cheekbones, blending well. This will make you ~*GLOW*~
Step 2: Place a tissue over your lips and brush translucent powder overtop to mattify your black.
Yep, it really works.
Step 3: Add some mascara, et voila!
The perfect everyday goth look.
Look #2: Glitter glam.
A delicate, hollow cat eye is the perfect way to balance heavy, glossy lips. Plus, it looks cool as hell.
Step 1: After lipstick, apply a shiny, glittery gloss overtop.
I used Dior Addict Gloss in Etoilee ($30, Overstock) because it's the only super-shiny gloss I can stand to wear. The subtle sparkle looks gold in the tube, but shines pinkish layered over the black.
Step 2: Add the cat eye.
I'm using LORAC Front of the Line PRO Liquid Liner ($23, Ulta), because it dries quickly, lasts all day, is SUPERBLY black, and the tip is beautifully fine. Holy Grail status for sure.
Define your eyebrows, and tah dah! The perfect combination of sci-fi and sexy.
Because sometimes you just need that sparkle boost.
WINK!
Look #3: Gold and black DRAMA.
You're already bringing the drama with the black lipstick — let's double down on your goth drama by adding smoky eyes and a touch of gold highlight!
Step 1: EYELINER.
The foundation of any smoky eye is gloriously dark eyeliner. Trace your upper and lower waterlines with waterproof black pencil liner, and I apologize, because there's no way to show this without it looking creepy AF.
Step 2: Smoke it out!
Using a small brush and gray eye shadow, blend and soften your line on your top and bottom lids. Gray isn't as severe as black, which creates a good balance with the SUPERDARKNESS on the lips. I used Dagger from the Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette ($66, Sephora)
Step 3: Highlight with gold on lips...
Using a loose eye shadow pigment and a densely bristled brush, tap some gold highlight to the center of your lips. I'm using bareMinerals Eyecolor in True Gold ($17.50, Sephora).
And before anyone asks: YES, you can use eye shadow on your lips, as long as you clean your brush or applicator well afterwards. Products that are safe for eyes are also safe for lips, but things that are safe for lips are NOT ALWAYS safe for eyes.
...And eyes.
Use a clean brush to apply a little of the same gold pigment to the inner corner of your eyes around your tear duct, because it's pretty and why not.
Step 4: Keep up with your kontour.
Using an angled brush and a matte contour powder one shade darker than your skin, enhance your cheekbones just a little by brushing the darker color underneath them.
The finished product is dramatic, gorgeous goth realness.
Bonus: Not only is it beautiful, the shimmery gold also makes your lips look more full. Take that, Kylie.
So now the question is, what look should I try next?
