Halloween is one of the most fun holidays of the year for many reasons. Some of those reasons include candy and indulging in overall spookiness. But a big reason many love this time of year is that the costume aspect gives people a chance to get creative and fun with dressing up or wearing something they normally wouldn't — makeup and hairstyles included.
Although unwashed hair is no once a year thing for moms and is super scary for some, Halloween could be a great time to experiment with new and fun styles, whether just to commemorate spooky season or to have it go along with a costume or outfit — for those Zoom parties of course. These are great for kids or adults or both, and there are even some ideas for folks with any kind of hair length.
Check out some of the hairstyles below and have a spook-tacular time recreating them.
Spooky Dot Low Updo
Black and orange are the colors of Halloween, but black with blond is a good spooky substitute. This low-bun updo can be recreated with a messy bun twist to start and then pinning the sides down. It was created by French hair artist Poppy Hairstyles.
Glittery Bat Twists
Whether the hair is done with as many twists as this updo or not, inspiration can come for spooky hair with the fishtail braids and criss-crosses in this hairstyle. Monamieweddinghair is behind this look, and what really completes it is the addition of rainbow glitter bats.
Emerald Ombre
Move over orange and black, because slimy green is another Halloween color contender. This emerald then "fade to slime" (as we call it) ombre long hair look is somehow chic and spooky at the same time. Stylists at Monarch Hair Co. are the witches behind this look on model Pheobe Jeebies.
Big Spider Updo
Big and bold updos don't have to be for special events or wacky hair days. Halloween is a wonderful opportunity to get creative with putting one's hair up. This look captured by a student at the Jolie Academy features a top bun with hair left out at the bottom that was tied to look like a spider web and topped with a skull.
Skull Fishtail Braid
Speaking of skulls, this is one of the most tasteful, influencer-style Halloween hair by Salon Studios East Cobb we've seen. It's a long fishtail braid on a half-up, half-down style with the "down" hair tied to the end of the braid — and little white skulls clipped in the center of each piece of hair before the next hair tie.
Spider Web Updo
This romantic spiderweb updo could actually be in an October wedding. It's loose twist backs peppered with cotton-style spider web sold by dollar or convenience stores with inexpensive plastic spiders added in. Hair by Thea is behind this look.
Orange Braids
Black and yellow may be the famous Wiz Khalifa song, but black and orange will always be the colors of Halloween season. These black and then very, very neon orange braids celebrate that season in a vibrant way. As artist PG Hair Designs says, 'tis the season!
Pumpkin Side Braids
We couldn't have a Halloween-related list without pumpkins! This hair design using smaller braids is the perfect touch for a cute Halloween hairstyle. Just pick hair on one side of the head and start braiding. Top it off with temporary hair dye. Its creator, Hair to Dream, has tutorials on YouTube.
Googly Eye Space Buns
Space buns are always a good idea, but there's something that makes them super special around Halloween time. One can just keep them casual, spray paint them a fun color, or get creative like Leslie Treser and add some store-bought googly eyes to the mix for more fun.
Maleficent Hair
Now this is major Halloween hair goals! Disney fans, does it look familiar? It's inspired by the Maleficent character in the film of the same name (played by Angelina Jolie). It was styled by Tiffany M. Hair using Sexy Hair products and it looks like it holds pretty well.
Spiderweb Cut
Not all Halloween styles have to be for long hair. Short-haired folks can participate in the fun with this spiderweb buzz-style line cut on the side of the head framing the ear perfectly. This one was buzzed by Hair by Elisabeth Taylor.
Half-Up Half-Down Bats
This hairstyle is far from as wild and wacky as the other spooky looks but just as festive. It's a half-up half-down hairstyle where the hair is curled and two black bat cut-outs are pinned or clipped to the tied part of the hair, so they look like they're fluttering in there. As Salon 13 (which styled this look) says, "Batty about this dimensional blonde."
Side Spider Lines
This is another side cut featuring a buzzed spiderweb look, but this one takes it up a notch with dyed hair as well and longer hair (long enough to put into a ponytail). Like the other style, this spiderweb done by student Ty Kuts of Nova Academy also frames the ear.
Side Braid Ribbon
We are getting major scary story ribbon vibes from this hairstyle (the story where the girl's head falls off when the ribbon around her neck is removed), but somehow this style is super cute. It's a side braid with a black ribbon through it. Done by Hair Art by Veera.
Unicorn Curls
The scary parts of Halloween are always the focus when it comes to themes and decor and hair, but Halloween can be about fun things too, because costumes and dressing up are a big part of the holiday. These colorful rainbow unicorn curls by Salon Studios East Cobb are a wonderful way to get into the spirit.
Big Eyeball Curls
This isn't a real person rocking this hairstyle, but we thought it fit the theme because mannequins are creepy and perfect for Halloween and the hairstyle it is rocking is great hair inspo. It's big retro curls but with eyeballs pinned inside (by Sarah McDougall).
Under hair spiderweb lines
On Halloween, there is no such thing as too many spiderwebs on anything. It's a big symbol of the season and super easy to do as a hairstyle. Instead of a buzz of it on the side of the head, this peek-a-boo hairstyle by stylist Faith at Plum Hair Atelier is a great way to get the look.
Skeleton Hair Clip
This hair look goes simple and all out at the same time. The dark hair with a lighter streak is very Bride of Frankenstein whereas the skeleton hair clip is a sweet and spooky touch. Hair done by Salon Cora.
One Side Curly Orange Hair
Sometimes simple is better when it comes to getting a theme across, especially if it's Halloween. That seems to be the idea behind this rocking half and half curly orange hairstyle created by Jess Fisher of Salon Lola. The dark brown hair on the other side of the model's hairdo makes it look even more festive.
Sparkle Waves
Remember how we said that Halloween can be about fun and pretty things and not just scary things? We meant that. Dress up as an angel, fairy, or any other ethereal being and top off the look with sparkly hair dots. Designed and styled by Aliona with Love.
