These Neutrogena makeup wipes are allegedly causing severe skin reactions

Even though I appreciate a good slayed face as much as the next makeup fanatic, there’s nothing more refreshing than taking it all off at the end of the day. Although we all have our preferences, for most of us, a handy makeup wipe usually does the trick. Personally, I always use Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Cleaning Towelettes, because 1) they’re inexpensive and 2) they get the job done. But after a user’s viral Facebook post, Neutrogena makeup wipe users are worrying they may have to switch to a new brand.

The viral post, which has been shared over 120,000 times and liked over 16,000 times, showed a severe skin reaction to the wipes.

"DO NOT USE these make up wipes…Alyssa has been using them for months but yesterday opened a brand new pack to use and This Happened!! We went on their website and TONS of reviews of the same reaction! Thought I would share so someone else doesn’t have this happen to them! #Neutrogena," Jaimie Potts captioned the post

When I went to Neutrogena's website to see if there were any other incidents of allergic reactions, I found there were several similar complaints.

Others said it "made [their] eyelids very red, [itchy], and dry."

The majority of the reviews were one to two stars, with most customers stating that they've used the product for more than three years before experiencing issues, so they've definitely been loyal Neutrogena users when it comes to makeup wipes.

Someone stated that they experienced "hives, lumps, bumps, and itching."

Another reviewer described waking up "with a few rashes."

Others stated that they didn't have an allergic reaction at all.

On the plus side, the company responded to most (if not every) complaint and statement, so it's good to see Neutrogena is on top of this issue.

Above the list of ingredients, there is a disclaimer.

"While Neutrogena…strives to keep ingredient lists on this website as accurate as possible, we cannot guarantee that these lists are complete, reliable, up-to-date, and error-free. Please refer to the ingredients list on the product packaging for the most accurate list of ingredients," the website stated

As of May 2018, the ingredients listed on the website were: "Water, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Isostearyl Palmitate, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Isononyl Isononanoate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Hexylene Glycol, PEG-4 Laurate, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sucrose Cocoate, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (EU 1279)."

So it's unclear what exactly could be causing this surge of allergic reactions, or if there's a real surge at all. Hopefully the brand will figure it out soon.

A Neutrogena representative issued the following statement to Revelist via email:
