A woman who thought she was attending a “white party” has alleged that a man tricked her into marrying him. Per The Guardian, when the woman arrived at the “white party,” she didn’t see anyone else wearing white. Instead, the party was actually a wedding, but the man had allegedly insisted that the ceremony was fake.
He reportedly told the bride that he orchestrated the fake wedding ceremony as an Instagram stunt.

The bride said the man wanted to attract more attention via Instagram.

After arriving at the event and realizing that no one else wore white, the woman was “shocked,” per the BBC. The man, however, assured her she had nothing to worry about: He had simply organized a fake wedding ceremony to boost his Instagram following.
“He pulled me aside, and he told me that he’s organizing a prank wedding for his social media, to be precise, Instagram, because he wants to boost his content, and wants to start monetizing his Instagram page,” the woman said, according to the news outlet.
The woman participated in the ceremony thinking that it was fake.
Footage from the wedding ceremony showed the woman participating “enthusiastically,” per The Guardian. She and the man exchanged wedding vows, exchanged rings and kissed. In court, however, she alleged that the whole thing was “an act” and an attempt to “make it look real.”

She later found out that they truly got married.
About two months after the “fake” wedding ceremony, the woman learned that the marriage was legitimate and not a simple social media stunt. She found out after the man asked her to list his name on her permanent residency application. Doing so would help him become a permanent resident in Australia, The Guardian reported.
Thinking that they were not actually married, the woman told him she could not do this because their marriage was fake. However, the marriage turned out to be real. She allegedly learned the man had “organized the marriage to help him” with his own permanent residency application.
The bride was 'furious.'

At the time of the “fake” wedding, the man and woman had been dating for a few months. In court, the man said he proposed to the woman a day before the wedding ceremony, and she accepted. According to The Guardian, the woman did not deny these claims in court. At the same time, she insisted that she thought the wedding ceremony was a prank.
Per the BBC, she said she was “furious” that the man “lied from the beginning” and “wanted me to add him in my application.”
A judge ruled that the bride did not consent to the marriage.
A Melbourne judge ruled that the woman truly believed she was participating in a “prank,” not a legitimate wedding. The judge also noted that the woman “did not have a single family member or friend present at the alleged wedding ceremony” even though “she was religious,” The Guardian noted.
Additionally, the judge thought “it made perfect sense for her to adopt the persona of a bride” when participating in what she thought was an Instagram stunt. In October 2024, the marriage was annulled.
