On Monday, November 4, Christine Ramirez, director of Emily Lembeck Early Learning Center in Marietta, Georgia, sent an email out to alert families that a child found a gun in their backpack, the Marietta Daily Journal reported.

The child did not knowingly bring the gun to school.

“Based on their interviews with the child and parent in question, [Marietta Police Department] confirmed the child’s normal school backpack was broken, and the parent hurriedly sent the child to school with a different bag today, not realizing the weapon was inside,” Ramirez said.

The discovery had to be shocking.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the child discovered the loaded firearm while they were getting their lunch out of the backpack. They immediately notified their teacher.

“MPD confirmed there was no intent to harm by the student or parent, and the teacher confirmed the gun was never displayed in the classroom,” Ramirez wrote in her email.

Currently, there haven't been any charges filed.

“We are proud of the ongoing partnership with the Marietta City School System, as well as how they train their staff,” he said. “We can confirm that the incident occurred, and that the child and teacher handled the situation flawlessly. Our School Resource Officers (SROs) will continue to investigate this incident to determine if criminal charges are warranted.”
