This Goth Mom ‘Ungoths’ Herself for Her Kid’s Doctor Appointments & for Good Reason

Just because you become a mom, it doesn’t mean you have to change your style in any way, but sometimes, moms who have a particular alternative style or look can face judgement. That might be why a goth mom on TikTok, Camille, is willing to “ungoth” herself when she needs to do typical mom things like doctor’s appointments for her kid.

In a video she posted where she does just that for an appointment, she shows how she takes off her elaborate makeup and totally switches up her look to appear more conventional, so to speak. Other women flew to the comments to share support for her and recognize that there is a time and place for certain looks.

Other moms rallied around her in support of her goth style.

In the video, Camille does take off her makeup and change her clothes, but she keeps a part of her style there. In a way, she just tones things down a bit, even if it’s not ideal for her.

“And the best part is I could still tell you were goth,” one user commented on the video.

Another person wrote, “think there’s a benefit to adapting to situations. Be yourself, but you can advocate for your child more effectively if others take you seriously. Many people in authority simply won’t take you as seriously if you’re fully dressed goth (fair or not, many won’t) so you’re doing your child a service by dressing down.”

Camille also replied to a comment to share her thoughts on being goth and being a mom. She wrote, “Being a mom is a whole new identity crisis and I’m so nervous about judgement towards me being passed down to my son.”

She said that someone told her she was scaring her kid.

@shakinglikeemilk hopefully this speaks to other mothers who face unfair judgement and scrutiny as well, not just for the goths 🫶🏻 #gothmom #momtok #altmom ♬ cigarette burns – slowed and reverb – moonvampire

In another video, Camille admits that someone told her she was scaring her infant son because of her style and makeup. For Camille, that hit pretty hard, since no parent wants to hear that they are negatively impacting their child in any way. And, just so we’re clear, there is little chance that this is true anyway. But still, for Camille, it didn’t feel great.

“That really stuck with me, because it made me think about something I don’t see talked about enough,” Camille says in the video. “Why does motherhood come with an unspoken expectation about how you’re supposed to look? It’s like the moment you become a mom, people start expecting you to present yourself in a very specific way. And if you don’t fit that image, people notice, especially if you’re goth, alternative, heavily tattooed, or just visibly different all together. And suddenly assumptions start forming about your personality or your parenting, not based on your child, just based on your appearances.”

She has done the “ungothing” thing before.

While other users on TikTok urged Camille to just be herself in any situation, the whole “ungothing” thing isn’t new to her. She seems to be OK with doing it from time to time if she feels more comfortable dressed down in certain situations. And, honestly, that’s totally up to her, as much as the internet seems to love her particular style.

In a TikTok she posted well before she had a baby and became a mom, Camille shows how she “ungoths” to meet her fiancé’s dad. In this video, she takes out her nose ring, takes off her makeup, and applies her makeup in a more subdued way. And somehow, she doesn’t totally lose her style in the process.

One person even commented, “Love how you still look goth. You just simply look like everyday goth instead of full goth. Like just got up goth.”
