11-Year-Old Sole Survivor of Family Shooting Says She ‘Played Dead’ as Brother Went on Rampage

The 11-year-old girl who survived the mass shooting that killed most of her family is sharing details about the harrowing event. On October 21, five members of the Humiston family, including the parents, were allegedly shot dead by their 15-year-old son. The 11-year-old girl was injured by her brother’s bullets, but used her quick thinking to save her life.

Now, her older brother faces charges on multiple counts of first degree murder. And after her release from the hospital, the girl is giving more insight into the terror she experienced at her brother’s hands.

The girl's police statement has been released.

New York Post has obtained the charging documents released by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. In the documents, the 11-year-old, who remains unnamed because she is a minor, shared her recollection of the events that occurred on the morning the Humiston family was murdered. She explained that her 15-year-old brother used her father’s handgun to shoot and kill their parents, two brothers, and younger sister, after failing some tests and getting into “a lot of trouble.”

The tween shared that her brother, who was wearing a checkered shirt, came in and shot her in the hand and neck. She laid still, holding her breath, fearing that he would come back to finish the job. The 15-year-old brother, who has also not been identified due to his age, was charged with five counts of first-degree aggravated murder and one count of first-degree attempted murder.

Her experience sounds horrifying.

The girl recalled being woken up by the sound of gunshots. Peeking out of her bedroom door, she saw her 13-year-old brother and father laying in a pool of blood. Her 6-year-old sister, who she shared a room with, was shot dead after walking into the hallway after she woke up.

After shooting her and leaving her room, her brother leaned over the bodies in the hall, touching their necks and chests to “see if they were alive,” she revealed.

Her quick thinking likely saved her life.

She revealed that she “pretended to play dead” when her brother came back into her room. When he left the room, she escaped through her bedroom window and ran to a neighbor’s house. She told police that her 15-year-old brother was the only one of the children who had the combination to the lockbox where their father Mark Humiston kept his firearm. The girl was treated for her injuries and released from the hospital on October 23.

The brother tried to pin the murders on another sibling.

Prosecutors stated that the teenager “systematically murdered” his parents, two brothers, and sister, and attempted to murder his 11-year-old sister. Then, he allegedly staged the grizzly murder scene before the first responders arrived. Police say he was trying to frame his 13-year-old brother, who was shot several times in the head, for the crime.

The deaths were all ruled as homicides.

Police arrived at the Humiston family home around 5 a.m., after getting a call from the 15-year-old boy. The 15-year-old claimed that his younger brother killed their family and then took his own life because he was afraid of being caught looking at pornography.

At the same time, police received a call from the neighbor who was with the 11-year-old sister. She named her 15-year-old brother as the one who committed the crime. After discovering the family’s bodies, police took the 15-year-old into custody.

Currently, the boy is in a secure detention facility at the Clark Child and Family Justice Center in Seattle.
