Parents Seek Answers After 2-Year-Old Was Trapped in Drain Full of Water for an Hour at Day Care

The parents of a 2-year-old girl are seeking answers after a horrific incident allegedly happened at day care. On November 1, 2024, their 2-year-old daughter was playing on the playground at Children’s Lighthouse, a day care in Prosper, Texas.

According to a new lawsuit, at some point while the toddler was playing on the playground, she fell into a drain filled with fecal water and remained stuck for close to an hour.

The lawsuit alleges that the young child wasn't found until nearly an hour after she fell.

The 2-year-old girl seemingly went missing while playing outside at the Texas day care. According to the new lawsuit, which was filed on December 12, day care staff did not call the police to report the missing child, per KENS 5. Instead, the girl was found about an hour after she went missing.

The girl fell into a 6- to 7-foot-deep drain.

Luckily, the child survived, but the drain was reportedly full of fecal water. The toddler “may have been submerged up to her neck,” according to the attorneys representing her parents.

The lawsuit alleges that after the young girl was found, she was dirty, distressed, and “blue and pale,” WFAA reported. Additionally, she was allegedly “peeing out dirty water.”

The cover of the drain read 'Danger, do not enter, fatal poison gas.'

It’s unclear exactly how the terrifying incident happened. The parents’ attorneys allege that the drain cover was unsecured, allowing the child to fall in. As to how the toddler got stuck in the drain, the lawsuit alleges that the drain cover could’ve been put back on or flipped over.

The parents claim that the day care refuses to share video evidence.

Because they want to understand exactly what happened to their daughter while she was at day care, the toddler’s parents have asked the day care for surveillance footage, KENS 5 reported. The parents say, however, that the day care has refused to share the footage with them.

In a statement shared with WFAA, Children’s Lighthouse of Prosper said, “Regarding the video, Children’s Lighthouse of Prosper is fully cooperating with all relevant authorities and working with its insurance team to ensure that everything is addressed properly.”

The day care did not deny that the incident occurred but called it 'an isolated incident.'

In spite of the allegations, the day care shared a statement with WFAA, assuring the community that “every child’s safety has been and will always be our top priority.”

“We wholeheartedly understand the concern surrounding this previous event, and we want to reassure our community that the situation that occurred on Friday, November 1st was an isolated incident that we’ve all taken very seriously,” the statement read.

Additionally, the day care said that it’s taking steps to ensure that this type of incident never happens again. As part of these efforts, the day care installed “a fence around the area” where the incident occurred, WFAA reported. In addition, the teacher who was supposed to be watching the girl has been fired.
